Today on our 2013 Chevy Captiva we'll be installing the Roadmaster taillight wiring kit with bulb and socket, part number RM-155. First we'll go ahead and open up the rear hatch. We'll then access the two fasteners behind the taillight assembly. Once we remove the two fasteners we can then pop the taillight assembly out of its position to gain access to the back of the taillight assembly. Now with our driver's side out, we'll move over to the passenger's side and repeat the same process. We'll need to find a suitable location for mounting the new bulb and socket.
The bulb and socket will mount directly into the back of the taillight housing. The flat area here just below the top bulb will be a perfect location. Using a 1" hole saw we'll go ahead and drill out the mounting hole for the new bulb and socket. Now with this particular housing, it's got two layers. We've gone through the outside layer, we'll now drill through the inside. Now once we have it drilled out we'll clean out any excess that fell inside the loom.
Now once we have it cleaned out we're ready to install our bulb and socket. The tabs on the outside of the socket are designed to be bent to fit the hole. We'll go ahead and bend them out a little bit so we have a nice and tight fit. Now with our passenger's side done, we'll move over to the driver's side and repeat the same process. Now with the bulb and socket assemblies installed, we're ready to start routing our wiring. We'll use the four pole wiring harness provided with our install kit.
On this end we will not need the plugs, we're going to go ahead and cut it off. Next we'll need to route it up behind the passenger's side taillight assembly. To assist in routing our wire we're going to use a pull wire, which can be a stiff piece of wire or in this case a piece of air tubing. We'll route it down behind the rear bumper fascia, between the bumper cover and the body of the vehicle. Once we have access to it underneath, we'll take the four pole harness, tape it to our pull wire and then pull it up behind the taillight assembly. Once we have access to the wiring, we can then remove the pull wire.
I'm going to go ahead and cut off about 12-18" of the wire. Then I'll take the white wire, split it off the loom and we'll use it for a ground here behind the passenger's side taillight assembly. I'll set that aside for now. Next we can go ahead and separate the four wires. Sometimes it can be a little easier to cut the sheathing between the wires first using a utility knife, being careful not to cut the wires. Now here on the passenger's side we won't need the yellow wire, so we're just going to go ahead and cut it short. Next, we'll strip back the three wires coming from the new taillight socket. Now using the butt connector provided with our install kit, we'll start securing our wiring. From our new taillight socket to the wiring harness we'll match brown to brown. With the red wire from the taillight socket we'll match up with the green wire. For our ground the taillight socket will be the black wire and our wiring harness will be the white wire. We'll also include the white wire that we cut off by adding it to. By adding the three wires together we can create a ground here behind the passenger's side taillight assembly. We'll take our extra length of white wire, the black wire from the taillight socket, twist the two wires together and then use the butt connector to secure them. We'll take the other end of our new ground wire, strip it back and add the ring terminals supplied with the install kit. Now we'll take the ring terminal and attach it to the body of the vehicle. When looking for an attachment point, we recommend a final location where the sheet metal doubles up for a more secure ground. Using a self-tapping screw we'll secure the ring terminal now. Now with all our connections made here on the passenger's side, we'll go ahead and wrap up our connection points with some black electrical tape. Now that we've got our wiring wrapped up, we'll go ahead and secure it with a couple of zip ties that's provided with the install kit. Cut off the excess from the zip ties and re-install the taillight assembly. Next we'll take our pull wire and feed it down between the bumper fascia and the body of the vehicle on the driver's side. Then we'll move underneath the vehicle, route the wiring over to our pull wire and pull it up behind the driver's side taillight assembly. Now as we route the wire across we can secure it to the manufacturer's wiring. Keep in mind when routing your wires stay away from any moving components such as steering and suspension or excessive heat such as the exhaust. Before I secure the wiring I'm going to pull it up behind driver's side taillight assembly. First we'll make sure we have enough. We'll loop the wire and then tape it to our pull wire. Now once we have the wiring pulled up behind the taillight assembly here on the driver's side, I'll move back underneath and secure any excess wiring as it routes from the driver to the passenger's side. Now with the wire secure we'll go ahead and cut the excess zip ties to clean up the install look. Now I'll move back behind the driver's side taillight assembly where we can remove the pull wire to start setting up to make the connections with the taillight socket here on the driver's side. Here on the driver's side we'll now need to go ahead and separate the four wires. The green wire will stay connected, but we'll cut the yellow, brown and white wire. Then we'll strip back all six ends and the three wires from our taillight socket. Now we can start connecting our wiring. The red wire will go to the yellow wire and then back to the yellow wire on the four pole harness. Then we'll connect brown to brown and then back to the brown wire. We'll take the ground wires which will be black coming out of the taillight socket and white on the four pole harness. Twist them together. Add our butt connector. Then add it b back to the white wire on our four pole harness. Once again with all of our connections made, we'll go ahead and wrap it up with some black electrical tape. Now with our connection points taped up we'll go ahead and secure our wiring behind the taillight assembly with the zip ties provided with the install kit. Cut off the excess from the zip ties and re-install the taillight assembly. Now we're ready to take the remaining four pole harness and run it up to the front of the vehicle and ultimately to the base plate wiring mount. As we route the wire we'll secure with the zip ties as necessary. With our four pole harness run all the way up to the base plate mount and secured we'll go back and cut off any excess of the zip ties to clean up our install look and that will complete the install of the Roadmaster Taillight Wiring Kit with Bulb and Socket, part number RM-155 on our 2013 Chevrolet Captiva. .

Use your towed car's signal lights without tapping into its wiring. This self-contained wiring kit bypasses your vehicle's electrical system, eliminating any concerns over violating the manufacturer's warranty.Went pretty easy. Holes for bulbs do fit in the rear lights. I had to use a 6way plug that had a 4way line on it also.
Always completely satisfied with Etrailer service and products! Jamie B is very knowledgable and courteous!
This was a good option for our 2020 Chevy Equinox because it does not tie into the tow vehicle electrical system and runs directly from the Motorhome electrical system.
Put this into a 2002 Jeep Liberty. Good directions. Drilled out the lower part of tail light housing and install bulb sockets into it. You may have to deburr the tail light housing a bit and manipulate the tangs on the bulb socket but is fine. I put in 1157 LED bulbs :) Good stuff!
This product was easy to install but it took some time routing the wiring harness from the front bumper to the rear. Pick up some extra zip ties, you will need several. The lighting system is independent allowing for the use of LED bulbs. Great product.
easy install one year later still working perfectly
it worked well
very well made and packaged
Found this item was wired with the brake lights for the brown wires and turn/running lights for colored wires and this fact kept me from getting this done very rapidly. Once identified, went together really nicely and actually grounded to frame for higher light output. I upgraded 3 wire into 2 wire converter with "Roadmaster Brite-lite 3 to 2 Wiring Converter" and they are as bright as the lights already in the housing. Except for that wiring issue, it would have been excellent. As to performance after install, great. Customer service was nice from Roadmaster as well. Did receive a call back message from etrailer a couple days later.
I purchased a Blue Ox base plate, Air Force One braking system, and a light kit for my 2013 Durango. I could have not asked for an easier process with selecting and ordering, also the tutorials and videos were a great help in determining what was the best system for me . Everything arrived as planned and in great condition. This is not my first time using etrailer.com and my prior experience was equally good.

After using the items I reviewed, about 6,000 miles, I am more than satisfied. The towing setup is easy to hook up and unhook and the braking system is second to none. All of the installation was completed by myself and a friend, both of us have a technical background him more than me and we found the videos of the installation extremely helpful.Thank you for following up and providing excellent products as well as support services.
Great customer service fast delivery and reasonable price. Been purchasing from ETrailer for years
Great idea. After years of towing with magnetic lights now all I have to do is plug it in, and I'm done.
The kit kit comes with more parts and wire than I needed and was simple to install on my 2010 JK.

Thanks Patrick. It works so well I forgot I had it.
I like this product and would definitely buy it again. I like not having to splice into the vehicle wiring and install diodes, etc. It is a clean installation with good instructions. All I have to do to hook up the lights is raise the hood of the towed car and pull out the pigtail and hook it to the motorhome. It is powered by the motorhome and does not run down the battery in the towed car. Great product.

Works great! Would definitely recommend it.
great kit i have installed them before
I have used the brake light wiring kit on 2 other towed vehicles. It is an easy install, does not compromise the original factory wiring and works well.

Easy install, working well 1 year later.
This kit really simplifies wiring tail lights on a vehicle that will be towed. No cutting into the vehicle's wiring and adding isolation diodes. Very functional and easy to install.

The parts are working perfectly. Thank you.
Kit was of good quality components. I would recommend about twice a much protective wire wrap along with extra of the smaller butt connectors. Fortunitely I had what I needed on hand. I also used a larger ring terminal.

Works great. 2002 Jeep Wrangler tail lights have plenty of room for the extra tail light bulbs.
Good instructions. Everything need is included for 4flat connections. One bulb socket arrived with the ground (black) wire loose in the bag. The solder joint had failed. Resoldered but had to remove the other wires and rubber insert from the bulb socket to avoid melting. Not a shining example for Roadmaster.

no issues, working as expected
Nice to not have to splice into vehicle wiring harness. Separate bulb assembly in existing tail light housing works great for towing our "TOAD" behind motor home.

Still works great after a year of towing to many destinations.
A very clever idea for an easy, neat, simple installation to safely operate tail lights on a towed vehicle. We installed this kit on our 2017 Chevy Sonic and it works great.

Thanks for the follow up. Everything is working just fine, no problems, nothing but good performance.
Great product, not a bad install and works great. I chose to cut off both 4 flat connectors and I installed a 4 round connector with spring cover on the front of my CRV. Looks and work out great.

Still working fine.
I really didn't want to install a separate bulb kit but our Equinox light was not compatible with our motor home. I was also installing a trailer lighting harness for the Equinox at the same time and doing them together made a lot of sense. I found this kit to be easy to manage and that drilling into the rear light housings not nearly as difficult as I had imagined. I would share a picture of the result but fortunately there is nothing to see - everything fit right into the Equinox's rear lamp structure. I compared the original lights with those from the kit driven by the RV and found them to be a great match. I upgraded the kit bulbs to LEDs for greater longevity.
I purchased this wiring kit for use in my 1999 Mazda Miata.
I did not want to cut into the OEM wiring harness, even using the diode method to safeguard the system. I felt that the fully separate wiring harness was more to my way of thinking for getting my car ready to tow.
I did not follow the included instructions that said to run the flat 4 wiring beneath the car, zip tying it along the way free of the exhaust and moving parts. I ran it through the firewall, beneath the dash, under the center console, and under the carpeting back into the trunk area. I then installed the bulb holders as instructed in my OEM Miata taillight fixtures.
I am happy to have all the wiring up and out of the way of potential road hazard damage, as well as the hot and/or moving parts beneath the car.
It works perfectly, and I am glad that I purchased this kit, and also that I decided to install it the way I felt best to do so.
It took much longer my way, but I'll never have to mess with it again.
This time it went without a hitch. last time was another thing. hopefully moving forward its all good.
thankyou
Watched video and installed with no issues. Great product! Will buy again for future vehicles.

Continues to work as it should! Very pleased with end product after installation by myself and continue to be happy every time I hook up since! Nice item! And customer service...Well they checked back with me a year later to see if I needed anything. How is that for the best customer service around! A
