Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the rear threshold panel and the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11141384 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Hopkins Plug In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the four-way flat trailer connector. This is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2014 and newer Buick Regals. On a custom fit part, I always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show you if this'll work for your application. This harness will provide this four-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights. It is compatible with five pole, six pole, and seven pole adapters that we do sell separately on our website. Everything does connect very quickly and easily. Basically you just locate your connection points, which are behind the taillights, plug in these connectors, one on the driver's side, one on the passenger's side.

There's no cutting or splicing required. Then you just ground your white wire, run your red power wire to your vehicle's battery. Now this does include this taillight converter here. This black box. This is to ensure that your vehicle's wire will match that of your trailer. It is a power module, which means it connects directly to the battery to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system.

I do use protective connection terminals to help resist corrosion. If you notice on the four-way it does come with this nice dust cover for the four-way. Basically when you're not lugging into your trailer, you can just put your cover over there and that'll protect those terminals from any damage or from the elements. Now it does come with everything shown here on the table. A few specs on this. The maximum amperage on the stop and turn light circuit is 3 amps per circuit and on the taillight circuit it's 6 amps.

Now just briefly I want to go through how all these parts connect. What you'll do is go to the rear of your vehicle. You can gain access behind the taillights. You'll want to start on the driver's side. You'll take this connector right here that has the yellow wire in it. That's for your driver's side.

You unplug the harness behind the taillight, plug this in to the harness in the taillight, and then the connector with the green wire you'll see the length of green wire. That's for the passenger's side. You'll run that over to the passenger's side. You do the same. Plug this in behind the taillights. Once that's all attached, then what you want to do is your converter box here you want to attach that to a good flat surface so it doesn't bounce around so you can use some of the cable ties that are included to attach that down. Then you'll have two wires left. You'll have a white wire and a red wire. The white wire is the ground wire. It has the eyelet on it. That you'll want to connect to a big clean ground if there's one nearby. If not, they give you a screw that you can use as a grounding screw. Then the red wire with the butt connector on that's for your power wire. That'll run to your vehicle's battery. So to do that, they do give you an extra length of wire to run up to the battery. One end will connect to this power wire just like that. The other end'll go up to the front. You don't want to connect that directly to the battery. You want to run it through this inline fuse holder. So you'll connect it to one side with the butt connector. The other side that has the eyelet on it, that's what'll connect to the battery. Then you just pop it open. Make sure it has the included 15 amp fuse pushed in there. Then your system'll be all ready to go. Now we do give you some extra cable ties to take up any slack in the wiring and we do give you a little package of terminal grease or dielectric grease. You do want to use that one all your electrical connections to prevent rust and corrosion. Then you just run your length of wire with the four-way on it up the back and you're ready to plug it into your trailer. That should do it for the review on the Hopkins Plug In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with the four-way flat trailer connector.
