Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

My review for an install on a 2019 Chevy Colorado WT Crew Cab
Overall good experience installing the full kit. The hitch was built well and matched the factory hole pattern for mounting. The hitch part took a little over an hour to install. The bolts that GM used are a friction type thread and are long winded so lots of wrenching on the side plates to remove and reinstall those, this was actually the most tedious part. The others you can quickly pop out/reinstall with an air or battery operated impact wrench. I had all the prep work done and called my brother to help with the lifting/change-out part.
I initially ordered the wrong wiring kit but James was very helpful in sending the proper kit out same day along with emailing me a return label to return the wrong one.
The wiring took about an hour and half as I'm pretty picky about how I do things. I tapped off an extra terminal provided on the battery system. You will need a 5mm nut (8mm socket) to install on this terminal. The existing crimped on ring was to large so I cut it off and crimp on my own. I routed the red 18 gauge wire down through the engine compartment and along a main feeder running along the driver side frame of the truck and on to the back upper left corner of the truck. I fished a pull string through the whole route before routing the wire, seemed to work well. It just takes time wire tie-ing everything neatly etc. The plug connectors matched the factory ones perfectly so that part was easy. A little tricky to figure out how to unplug them. Pull the locking red slider tab back and push down hard on the black tab and the connector will slide apart. I grounded the white wire to a frame ground where a factory wire was grounded. I had to cut the existing terminal off and crimp on my own as the factory one was meant for an approx. 5mm fastener. The grounding bolt has a 6mm dia. (10mm socket/wrench) needed to remove/reinstall it.
See pics provided, hopefully this will help others with the install.

I bought this about a year ago and it worked great until recently- now when connected the trailer lights come on when the vehicle lights are off and the turn signal function doesn't work at all- i assume the electronic module has gone bad- unfortunately it only has a 90 day warranty- I purchased another one only because it is the only one I could find for my vehicle- the new one works fine which confirms that the electronic module failed. I only hope this one lasts longer.

2016 Chevrolet Colorado

The wiring harness was in the box with the hitch and was well packaged. I read the directions and removed the drivers side tail light but the plug I was looking for wasn't behind the tail light assembly, it was anchored under the truck near the tail light cavity. I didn't remove the passenger side tail light, no need to. What took the most time was running the red wire up to the battery. I threaded it through as many existing wiring harness clamps as I could and used a stiff wire to fish it up to the battery area. I also soldered the red wire to the harness on the bench and used two layers of heat shrink to insulate the splice. I trimmed it to length at the battery end and used the crimp connector. I plugged it into my trailer for a test and it works great. I would like to find a bracket for the plug then it would be perfect. All in all it is a good product at a good price and is as simply to install as it probably can be.

2012 Chevrolet Colorado

Just finished installing the OEM T connector kit on my '16 Chevy Colorado. Everything went together smoothly w/ plenty of wire left over that just needed to be zip tied/secured out of the way. The most time consuming was running the 12 volt power wire to the battery. At first I was looking for a short cut via just finding a hot wire and splicing into that but in the end I decided to do it right and feed the power wire all the way to the battery box. The box on my truck had an open battery pole even so it was just a matter of connecting the fused (15 amp) supply wire ("O" connector already there) and after tying off the power wire run for length, making the crimp connection. It all checked out just fine on the first test/try. Good quality and I am very happy w/ the results. I found this wiring kit at twice the price that etrailer is charging and I don't think it's worth that. At the etrailer price, I believe it's just about right for the money. Total time to install, approx. 1 hour.

I did not like the complexity of this product....having to run a hot wire all the way to the battery--for what?? Why no offering for simple vehicle lights powered plug-in and done?? My 8 ft light trailer needs more?

2016 Chevrolet Colorado

This is the second of this product I have ordered and installed. The first worked for about 6 months and then began to fail. First, the taillights would stay on unless the plug was disconnected regardless of whether the lights were on, or the truck was running. Then the directionals would not work in one direction or the other. Never seemed to be a reason why, or which side would malfunction. I pretty much diagnosed it as the control part. Ordered a new one and thought I paid for the two-day shipping. Took 6 days, but it is now working. Did not replace the wire to the battery/fuse, but installed the new controller with the T connectors and everything is working again. Hopefully the original was just a fluke, and this one will last.

by:
2017 Chevrolet Colorado

Hooked it up per the instructions and it worked great the first time. One thing to mention is running the power (RED WIRE) is kind of a pain but not to bad. I also changed out the eyelets for the ground and power wires. The reason I did this was to accommodate the factory ground bolt right at the back of the truck and I took the nut off the battery clamp and used that bolt. The eyelet that come with the harness will not fit. You need 1/4" eyelets. All said not a big deal. Install is simple and the product works great.

by:
2015 GMC Canyon

Plug and play as advertised. Saved $400 compared to what the dealer wanted to install trailer wiring. Videos on the install were a big help.

by:
2016 Chevrolet Colorado

I was surprised at how fast I received this. I was not expecting it for another 3 days. Installation was a breeze. I could have gotten it installed in 45 min. but I guess I'm a little picky on the securing of the wiring that ran to the front of the vehicle. I have yet to test it, but I am quite sure it will work because of the configuration it has. I recommend this if you do not want to hack and splice the factory wiring of your vehicle. From experience, the splicing always needs repairing in 6 to 18 months, because of corrosion. Well worth the expense.

by:

Simple to install, but a little electrical knowledge is needed. Works great!

by:
2016 Chevrolet Colorado

Quality is very good, takes a while to install . You will have to run the supplied B+ wire to the battery , but this ensures that the trailer wiring load does not interfere
with your truck wires.

UPS managed to bend one of mounting tabs. I straightened it and fit good. Wiring harness works great. Thanks
