Installation of Trailer Wiring Harness and Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with a 2016 Chevy Colorado

Question:

I watched the video for installing the HM40975 plug on a 2015 Chevy Colorado. I have a 2016 Colorado, but my truck doesnt have the OEM wiring plugged in to the back of the dummy plug. Now what?

If your 2016 Chevrolet Colorado doesn't have the factory wiring for a 7-way trailer connector, like # HM40975-11998, behind the bumper (Or anywhere else) you will first need to install a 4-way connector using # HM11141164. This plugs in behind your truck's taillights and then a hot lead ran up to the battery and connected using a fuse holder.

Once the 4-way is installed you can use our # ETBC7 kit for a fully functioning 7-way. This will also provide you with the necessary wiring to install an electric brake controller, if you need one. I suggest the Prodigy P2 # 90885. It's one of our top sellers because of how reliable and easy to use it is.

If you don't already have a hitch receiver I suggest the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 76004. This confirmed to fit your truck. I've linked an install video for you.

Depending on your trailer setup you may want an adjustable ball mount like the B&W Tow & Stow # BWTS10037B. This will give you either 5 inches of drop or 5-1/2 inches of rise. The great thing about the Tow & Stow is that it can be flipped underneath the hitch when you're not towing. Use # BX8858 for a locking hitch pin. If you find you need a different ball mount I've linked our selection that will fit the Draw-Tite hitch as well as an article to help you determine the correct rise or drop you need.
