Hi everybody, my name is Andy with etrailer.com and today we're taking a look at Coghlan's 5-in-1 Survival Tool. If you're looking for an affordable survival tool that can provide many different functions and take up limited space, this might be an item for you to consider. Let's take a closer look at it. What we see here is this does have 5 functions that this can provide for you. I am going to begin by taking a look at the waterproof matchbox and I was able to fit 19 standard size kitchen matches in there. And these are wooden kitchen matches, and I was able to get 19 in there.

So that's a pretty good number to take on whether you're backpacking or taking a walk or a hike. You'll have a good supply of matches. Obviously this doesn't just need to hold matches. You can use this for bits of tinder or an emergency supply of cash. Really, you can use that container for just about anything, but it is water tight because of this included o-ring here.

And I will let you know that this o-ring does have a tendency to pop off. So be aware of that. And the idea is when you screw this lid down, it seats this o-ring and that'll keep water and moisture out of that container. While we have this container opened and I have the lid off, inside of the lid, there is a mirror to use for signaling, and also you can make sure that you look well and look nice. And you can use that to make sure you don't have any bits of food in your teeth.

I will let you know that especially if you drop this, that mirror does have a tendency to pop off. So there is a little bit of glue that holds that mirror in, but you might want to stick some double-sided tape in there to make it a little bit more secure up against the bottom of this lid and you will be good to go. Now closing this up on top of the lid, we do have a liquid fill compass, and this is very accurate. I was able to compare it to my iPhone compass app. And it's a very handy thing to have with you on the go.

You just want to keep this away from other magnetic sources that of course will affect your readings, but all in all, it's a very accurate little compass that is included on this survival tool. Next is the Flint Rod that we have right across the cylinder here. And the first thing I thought is this would be really handy to use, to strike a match against, and this would light your match, that is not the case. If you need to take something with you to ignite your matches, they do recommend taking the strike pad off of your matchbox with your matches and throw that into the cylinder, just so you have a way to ignite your matches. The way that you use this is with a knife blade, you just use your knife blade to strike across that and that will spark. And the idea is you get those sparks on bits of tinder to get your fire going. And then finally we have a signal whistle and this will let out a shrill tone to signal others in emergency. And it works pretty well. Let me give you a demonstration of that. So that is a functional effect of part of this survival tool is this whistle. And this does include a lanyard that you can put around your neck. And this is about a 45-inch long lanyard that you can run through the eye here, and it'll provide convenience not only around your neck, but also if you want to tie that up to a pack as well. Obviously it is bright orange for visibility. So I think you'll have a hard time losing this. Now, let me just give you some measurements. As we wrap up our look at this item. The overall length of this survival tool is sitting right at about 4 and 5/8 inches long.
