Ellen: Hey everybody. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com and we're taking a quick look at the GSI Outdoors Santoku paring knife. This is a Japanese-inspired style of knife, of Santoku knife. This isn't exactly a Santoku but it is kind of inspired by that style. So it has that sheep's foot design, which gives it a false point so that you don't have to worry about running into anybody with this, keeps it kind of safe, and normally you would just have a straight blade. This does have a bit of a curve, so it kind of gives you a cross between that a traditional straight blade for chopping, but it also allows you to do that rocking motion that we're more familiar with in the West with Western-style knives.
You can use this as a pairing knife or a very small chopper. It has a fairly good half to it. You don't want it to be too heavy because this is going to be going in your pack for camping. Maybe you're using it in your RV and you just want something nice and compact. I like that it comes with a little keeper to make sure that if you're putting this in a drawer or in your pack, you're not going to accidentally nick yourself on that, it also keeps the blade protected as well.Let's take a closer look and I'll give you some measurements to make sure that this is the right knife for you.
Again, better look at that blade. Should do a pretty good job of cutting through anything that you might want to use with this, tomatoes, fresh fruit, onions, stuff like that. If you want to just kind of pare up some potatoes or anything like that, peel and things and other things should do a pretty good job.The blade is made out of stainless steel, so it should be pretty durable, should hold the edge fairly well, and remain rust free. The handle is just a straight rubber, but it does have a little hole in there so if you wanted to put a safety strap around it, it's never a bad idea whenever you're handling a knife. As far as the overall length, it's about eight and a quarter inch long, and then about an inch wide and about a half inch deep for that handle.
Shouldn't really be too different with the protective sleeve on there. Maybe about eight and a half inches in length now.It is covered by a limited lifetime warranty from GSI Outdoors, and it weighs a little under two ounces, and that's pretty much all there is to it for our quick look at the GSI Outdoors Santoku style paring knife. I hope this has been helpful in deciding if this is the right knife for you. We do have a lot of other camping gear and cooking, camping kitchen gear here at etrailer.com and all kinds of accessories for your RV, boats, and more so be sure to check it out and thanks for watching..
