When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

Adjustable Channel Design

The adjustable channel on this trailer brake actuator allows for ultimate versatility. Mount almost any type of coupler (sold separately) - from a standard ball coupler to a lunette ring or clevis attachment - to fit your specific application. In addition, the 3 mounting positions on the channel let you adjust the height of the coupler. Just place the coupler so that it matches the height of the ball mount or other hitch attachment on your tow vehicle and you will be able to tow your trailer levelly.

This actuator is great for tall trailers. This is because the adjustable channel is positioned so that the mounted coupler can sit below the actuator tube, allowing for a greater drop than with a standard center-mounted channel. As a result, you can line up your tall trailer with your tow vehicle's hitch for a level setup.

Video Transcript for Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4856520 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Titian disc brake actuator with electric lock out. It has the 5 position adjustable channel, zinc finish, and a 20,000 weight capacity. Now this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer's brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. On the very back there, and I'll swing this around, you'll see there's a solenoid attached to the master inaudible 00:00:20 on the back. This is an electric reverse lock out which will let you back up without actuating your trailer brakes. Basically this reverse lock out will automatically activate when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse.

The way it does that, you'll notice it has 2 black wires coming out of it. One wire will attach to your reverse light circuit, the other to a good, clean ground. When you put your vehicle in reverse, the solenoid will ensure that the actuator does not activate your trailer brakes. Thus allowing you to back your trailer up. Now to use this lock out feature you do have to have a 5 pull flat 6 way round R7 pull trailer connector. If you notice the shield over it, it has a built in shield to help protect the valve from any elements, and from any damage.

If you look on the front here, it has a nice offset adjustable channel. It has 5 different mounting positions for your coupler. If you notice, this one has a nice built in drop, which is great for tall trailers. In this channel you could mount almost any type of coupler, from a standard ball coupler to a lunette ring, to a clevis attachment to fit whatever application you need. I'll give you a few measurements on the channel. The width of it inside is 3 inches.

The height of the channel from the very bottom to the very top is going to be right at 12 inches. Now there are 6 holes in it. The distance from one hole center to the other is 2 inches. Now this actually does use a unique roller design to reduce your distance during your telescoping of the actuator to create a straight line movement. If you'll notice right here where the rollers are, there's 2 grease serve fittings. Basically you can put your grease in on there and pump grease in there to help lubricate the rollers.

It is a sturdy, durable steel construction. Helps resist bending in any jackknife situation. The whole actuator has a nice zinc plating to it to provide corrosion resistance. If you notice it does come with a breakaway kit. I unhook it here, you can see here's your chain. That's hooked to your breakaway lever, so this hook on the end will connect to your tow vehicle, and by chance if your trailer ever breaks away or disconnects from your tow vehicle, the chain will pull that lever to actuate the brakes and keep the trailer from a runaway situation. This is a bolt on installation. If you can see right on the bottom here there's a mounting channel. It is designed to fit on a straight 3 inch wind trailer tongue. inaudible 00:02:42 bolted on. A few specs on this again, the application is for trailers with disc brakes. Gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds. Maximum tow weight is 2,000 pounds, and the vertical range of adjustment on this coupler right here is 10 inches. That should do it, for the review on the Titan disc brake actuator with an electric lock out, 5 position adjustable channel, with the zinc finish, and a 20,000 weight capacity.
