Video Transcript for Yates Boat Trailer Y-Style Bow Stop Review

Ryan: Hey everybody, my name's Ryan. And here at Etrailer, we install, test fit, and review a lot of different parts, that way we could try to answer any questions those of you might have. And that's exactly what we're doing here today. We're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the line of Yates heavy duty rubber Y-style bow stops for boat trailers. So a bow stop is a simple, yet pretty important component to have on your boat trailer. It's going to do a couple things.

It's going to help prevent you from overshooting whenever you put your boat back on the trailer, whenever you pull it out of the water. And it's also going to help provide just a little bit of support, a little bit of cushion here in the front, whenever you're towing your boat down the road, that way it's not getting jostled around and hitting any metal, anything like that. It's just going to be there to help keep everything riding nice and smooth. So the reason today that we actually replaced the bow stop is you could take a quick look at the original one, and easily tell that it has seen better days. I mean, this thing is so worn out. It probably really wasn't doing any good up here.

So this one is definitely an improvement, and should make things go a little bit smoother. Now with that being said, this is a really thick, heavy duty rubber. So I don't really see it wearing out super fast. So you should get some good years out of it. With that being said, though, this rubber could potentially leave scuffs.

On this old aluminum fishing boat, really not too concerned with it, but if you have a fiberglass boat, especially, for example, it's something you might want to think about. However, there's another bow stop available, and this one's made from a different material and is scuff proof. So if leaving marks here are something you really don't want, you could always use this as an alternative, and that'll prevent any scuffs from happening. So overall, I actually think this turned out pretty nice. Just give me a little bit more confidence whenever I'm trailering the boat, I'm not going to have to worry about overshooting it as much or anything like that. And just whenever I'm trailering it down the road, the rubber actually contours pretty nicely to the bottom of the boat when you tighten everything down.So it should really provide a good cushion, if you will, whenever I am hitting bumps and things like that.

And just going to do a good job of keeping everything in place. Now, as far as the installation goes, it's relatively simple, really not a whole lot involved. One thing I do want to mention is you may have to pick up some new hardware. Doesn't come included with that hardware. But if your original hardware will work and is in good shape, by all means, you can go ahead and reuse that.So with all that being said, shouldn't take you a whole lot of time and really give you a whole lot of issues whenever you do go to put this on. Speaking of which, let's go ahead and do that together now. To begin your installation, you're first going to want to remove your old stop. So I went ahead and took that off and what I've actually done is just removed the whole bracket itself. And I did that because I think it'll be a little bit easier to get everything set up on here and kind of pushed into place.Ideally, you do this with your boat off the trailer. We're just kind of working around that. So I think it's going to be a little bit easier if I have everything somewhat bolted together, I might have a little more leverage to kind of push this up into place. Now, with that being said, keep in mind, every setup is going to be a little bit different. But for the most part, this should get you pointed in the right direction. So at this point, I'm just going to take our new stop, put it in our bracket, line the holes up. And I'm going to take our bolt, work it through to the other side. And what I think I'm going to do, is just tighten this down a little bit. So once I find where it needs to be, once it's on there, we can come back and tighten our bolt down. So now that we have our setup loosely assembled, I'll go ahead and put it into place here. Again, I think I'm just going to get everything hand tight for now, that way it'll kind of just rest in position, and we can get it exactly where we want it. So I found that everything fit best with our bracket down as far as it can go. And now I can position our bow stop. Now our boat is on the trailer a little bit crooked, once I removed our strap it kind of came over. So this should sit more in the center, but I think once we put our strap back on it, it'll pull everything together nicely. But now I got a good idea on how I need to rotate our bow stop itself. So I'm going to kind of eyeball it. I think about there will be proper, then I'm going to snug it down. So now that we have everything tight, if I put a little bit of downward pressure, it looks like everything fits pretty good the way it should. So now that I'm certain I have it lined up where I want, I'm just going to go ahead and connect my winch back to it, and pull it back down on the trailer. That'll finish up our look at and our installation of the line of Yates Y-style heavy duty rubber bow stops for boat trailers..

Very nice quality rubber, exactly what I needed for my boat trailer.

Good price and quality. Even with shipping, it's less money than any other online seller who offers free shipping. Customer service is always top notch since I've been buying from etrailer for over 10 years.

I like the 4 of support. My original bowstop was 2 and the wrong angle. I was replacing my bowstop every year. I couldnt get the right angle to match the front of my boat til I put this bowstop on. I did have to make a new bowstop bracket out of heavy galvanized steel to make it fit. Make two bends and drill three holes. End result after over a year. I couldnt be happier. A few times when loading the boat, we drove to boat a little too hard on to the trailer. This bowstop took the hit from a 400HP, 24 boat like a champ. Having the proper angle and double the rubber makes all the difference. Unlike the roller bowstop, this bowstop does not damage the gelcoat.

My Boat trailer had the circular hard plastic Bow Stop/cradle near the crank. A friend noted that I was getting a few nicks so I wanted to go back to the traditional black rubber V type cradle for my bow. etrailer had a great variety and shipped the one I wanted immediately. It arrived within a few days. etrailer was also the only place that stocked the proper grease seals for my trailer on a previous purchase. Thank you all at etrailer

by:

Switched to the y Block from a 7” roller as the roller would compress and had torn to the point one of the brackets protruded to the point of damaging the gel coat. This seems more substantial And should do the trick. ??

by:

Ordered this to replace a broken roller that was on the bow stand. I did however use a stainless steel bolt for mounting the Y-Style Bow Stop. Item works great arrived fast and easy to install.

by:

The right part and the perfect fit. Arrived even quicker than I expected! Thanks e-trailer!!

@CaptP We're glad the bow stop is working well for you!

Product arrived quick. Perfect replacement for bow bumpers. Even though I like etrailer, I got more happier when I noticed my bow stop did not have their logo on it. I use this on a 26 foot boat trailer.
Highly recommend as it is a hard yet giving rubber and priced right.

I would invest your money in a polyurethane roller or bumper. This Yates rubber bumper cracked within a few months. It is not durable as you might think. So I now use a polyurethane roller and also like the cool blue color of it. As for the Yates rubber, well lets just say a lesson learned and in the trash it went.

All is fine w the part I acquired.

by:

The v-stop, crank and steps are first class, well made and fit perfectly, with good instructions and easy installation.

But the boat guides by Smith were not so good. The metal was galvanized and had a lot of sharp edges. I cleaned up the sharp edges (remember, kids play areound the boat and trailer) and the metal looked cheap that way, so I painted everything.

I suggest that you contact Smith and tell them to add "break all edges" to their manufacturing process, as well as at least add a coat of primer ot the metal.

Overall, I rate the products with 4 stars and the service at etrailer as AWESOME!

by:

Exceptionally robust rubber bumper stop. Together with the bow roller bracelet, they form the perfect addition to a homemade bow stop mounted on a 4x4 post that will be used to guide the boat onto the lift.

by:

Bow stop for my boat trailer came before expected delivery date. Everything is as stated on information sheet. Pleased with etrailer sales and service.

by:

The block supports the weight better than the plastic roller that the trailer came with

by:

Ordered boat trailer bow stop bumper. It arrived quickly and should work well on my trailer.

by:

The Y shaped bow stop was exactly as represented, and it should serve me well. Service was fast, even in this Corona Virus era. I was very pleased and will absolutely turn to etrailer for any future needs.

by:

The part was purchased to replaced and aging part on a 1974 trailer which is in excellent condition in spite of it's age being well taken care of. It fit well and is of the same quality as the original part.

by:

Fits the bow stop bracket well, and holds the boat snuggly to the trailer.

by:

Was what I needed and it was what e-trailer said it was. Product was delivered on time. Thank You!

by:

Much better than the hard plastic roller that came with my trailer. Large and sturdy and looks like it won't mar the paint.

  • Bow Stop with 7 Inch Long Span and 4 Inch Wide Base
I do have the y-style bow stop in the size you need but it is not offered in the thermal-plasticized rubber (non-marking). Instead you will want to use the Yates Y-Style Bow Stop part # YR7Y44-4 which has a 7" span and 4" base (see photo). The bow stop is made of a similar heavy-dry rubber that does have the tendency to leave marks. Unfortunately, this is the only option we have for you. I have attached a review video on the bow stop for you as well.

  • V Stop for Sail Boat Trailer with 1/2" Bolt
While you could drill out the hole on your V stop to accommodate the 1/2" bolt, it would probably lose some of the strength and there's always a chance that you could split the rubber/plastic molding; your best bet in these situations, since they are readily available, is to just use a bow stop with a 1/2" hole already in place. I recommend going with the CE Smith Y Style Bow Stop for Boat Trailers # CE29554 which is made from a non-marring PVC. This bow stop has a 2-3/4" base and a 4-1/4"...

You will need a bracket that has a 3/8 inch diameter shaft. At this time we do not offer a 3/8 inch diameter shaft. I recommend bow stop # YR7Y44-4 used with bracket # CE31005PG and shaft # CE10700A for your bow stop set up.

  • Can Y-Shaped Bow Stop Be Replaced with Bow Roller On Boat Trailer
If you are referring to a bow stop such as the Yates Y-Style Bow Stop for Boat Trailers part # YR7Y44-4 then yes you can replace this with a bow roller such as the Bow Roller Assembly part # YR450Y-400Y which won't mark the boat. This can then be used with the CE Smith Bow Roller Bracket for Winch Stands part # CE31005PG or you can match one to fit the bracket you have now from the list below.

For your 3 inch bow stop, I recommend Yates Y-Style Bow Stop for Boat Trailers - TPR - 6-1/2" Span - 1/2" Shaft - Yellow, # YR333Y. This is a thermal plasticized rubber so it will not leave any marks on your boat hull. The base is 3 inches wide with a 1/2 in hole diameter. It does however have a larger span that cradles the boat. I've included a review video for you to check out.

It sounds like you most likely could just add some of the CE Smith Keel Roller Assembly for 3" Wide Trailer Tongue # CE32003G or # CE32005G for 2" tongue, in front of your Drotto System to help keep the nose of the boat up when loading it under these conditions. You could also potentially fabricate something using the Yates Y-Style Bow Stop # YR7Y44-4 on some sort of welded on posts to provide you with a way to keep the nose of the boat from dipping too low.
