This is what the OffGrid Basket looks like without the extension. And this is what your basket looks like with the extension piece. Hey everyone, it's Evangelina at etrailer, and today, we are taking a look at our 18-inch extension for the Yakima OffGrid Basket. This is the 40-inch wide extension, and it adds 18 inches of length. So, that's for the medium OffGrid Basket. If you have the large OffGrid Basket where it's 49 inches wide, that's going to be a separate extension part.
As you can see, with the extension installed, this fit seamlessly with your current basket. So, you have the same design, the same metal construction, the same black powder coat finish. You also have the ability to use the clamps underneath the extension piece or with your original bars, and you get the accessory bars on top. Now, while this increases the amount of cargo space you have, it does not increase your cargo capacity, and that's because you're still limited to 165-pound weight capacity. In fact, the extension piece for our medium size adds 12 and a half pounds.
So, add the weight of your carrier, add the weight of your roof rack, add the weight of your cargo, (hands tapping) and make sure it doesn't exceed your vehicle's capacity. So, this encases the length of your medium basket from 44 inches long, all the way up to 62 inches long, there's no in between. You also have where you can move the accessory bars to a different crossbar spread, and this fits the crossbar spread of your vehicles differently as well. Check out our product page for our full kit, where we put down all of those different numbers, that way, you can compare with your own vehicle if this will fit your crossbar spread, as well as your accessory bar spread needs. So, the first thing (metal shuffling) you're gonna do, is you wanna get your old OffGrid Basket, and uninstall it.
Now, if you lost (component clinking) the tools from your original basket, the kit includes the tools, you're gonna take this apart to get the hardware inside. So, there's those four bolts on the side rails, as well as the bolts underneath. So, once you take the last bolt out, (bolt clinking) you are then able to pull apart your basket, (component clinking) and grab those plates or brackets. We're moving to the garage floor for more space, because now, we have the extension piece. (metal clinking) So, the hardware you took off earlier, that's gonna go to one side, the new hardware included with your extension piece, that's gonna go to the other side of your old OffGrid Basket.
So, I start by just (metal clinking) lining it up with those side rails. (metal clicks) And then, we're gonna fit our brackets in and through. (brackets clinking) (component shuffling) (metal clinking) With the bottom brackets in place, flip it over, so you can do the side rails. (metal shuffling) There's two pieces. There's the bottom receiver, (component shuffling) and then the top bolt. Now, do that for all of the four connecting pieces. (component clinking) With all the connector pieces tightened down, and your brackets tightened down, you can now move your crossbars if you want to, where it will fit your accessory. So, here I have a friend, Aiden to help me out. Begin the basket up and onto the roof. (basket clinking) If needed, (basket shuffling) you may need to move your clamps to match your crossbars. If your crossbars have less than a 27-inch crossbar spread, (metal shuffling) you are going to have to move one of the clamps to the extension. (clamp shuffling) (clamp clicking) That right there was a look at the 18-inch extension for the Yakima OffGrid Basket. You can also find it as a full kit, or as an extension piece separately here at etrailer.com.

Loving the free and super fast shipping . Order a medium Yakima off grid with extension for my 2021 Highlander
Super great job and even received my order sooner than promised! Awesome job!
Installed onto 2018 Subaru Outback. I recommend the extension for this car, it has a long roof and this looks great on it.
Adds room, meshes nicely and didn’t change the minimum crossbar distance for mounting the rack.
I had the Yakima off grid basket. It just wasn't big enough, so I bought the extention.
Unfortunately the extension doesn't fit together well. The original basket was tight, snug and didn't rattle at all. Since adding the extension kit, the basket rattles and is not snug. The new connectors appear, visually, to be the same as the original, but they are not. I had requested new hardware and only received the screws, not new brackets.
I'm kind of disappointed considering the price of the original basket and the extension kit...
Super fast shipping and came in a really nice box! The yakima extension looks pretty nice too!!!
Item arrived quickly and as advertised. No complaints at all.
Fast delivery part in stock fair price
