How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I purchased this jack because it is the exact same model as the jack installed on the trailer at the factory. I have attached a photo of the one I removed. I had the trailer power washed and the spray damaged the membrane that covered the three switches that operate the jack. The resulting exposure damaged the switches which could not be repaired. Not the best design in my opinion.

The Smart Jack has taken to just clicking when the down arrow is pressed. I have to break out the crank handle to lower the tongue of the trailer. If I have to replace it AGAIN it will not be a Lippert jack. Totally dissatisfied!

We have reached out to Lippert about the switch on the jack. It sounds like the screw or the motor on the jack is damaged as the switch is working and the motor is not. If it is within a year old it is covered under warranty however if not it is time to buy a new one.

ordered overnight and got in a timely f ashion!!!

I am replacing my 2 year old Smart Jack. The old one broke. The "buttons" on the Smart Jack are flush and difficult to press sometimes. My biggest complaint is that the plastic covering the "buttons" fade in only 2 years. My wife is sewing a cover to protect it from the sun. I do give 5 GOLD STARS to etrailer.com. Your website is easy to navigate and there is a generous amount of infomation and video on your products.

Gamechanger, so much better than a hand crank

by:

I own two of these jacks and they've worked well for the most part. The nice feature is the ability to press a combination of buttons and it will either retract or rise to a pre set height without you having to hold down the button, which is very convenient and allows you to hook up other parts of the trailer while it is working.

The downside is one of the jacks immediately developed a crack in the top of it. There was a recall on this jack where a crack would happen and water intrusion would cause the jack to extend when you are driving....not good. My jack wasn't part of the recall, but likely they really didn't fix the problem, so it still happens on some units. I did request a warranty repair and after many back and forth questions about my trailer, they would repair it, but the shipping expense was on me. Now shipping is going to add up to 1/3 or more of the item cost and I also won't have a jack for a little bit, so I'm just going to risk it.

So it is a nice product because the jack has some unique features, however the known issue of the cracking of the unit is kind of annoying.

by:

This jack has plenty of power for raising and lowering my 10,000 lbs camper.
The automatic features are annoying and get in the way of easy operation. The memory setting is useless because it never works. The automatic down works ok.
I regret buying this model and intend to purchase a simple up/down one in the future.
This is the model jack that came standard with my grand design reflection TT. The one that came with the unit new was replaced by recall. The replacement lasted 2 seasons
and cracked causing water to ruin the electrics. I wanted to keep everything stock so purchased the third. I also keep a cover on it to protect that cheap plastic on the controls. I won't hate to see this one go and join his two brothers in jack heaven.
etrailer is great to deal with and I will do business with them in the future.

by:

Kept draining battery and could not work off of the truck when plugged in. Trailer customer service couldn't be reached by phone and never returned email request for help.

by:

Easy to install. Some nice improvements over the older model.

by:

I ordered a few things that day from some other companies and this is the only thing that has made it to me. Very happy with Etrailers being so fast to get my products to me. And it was very easy to instal.

by:

Smart Jack arrived in just a couple days and looks great. Will install later do to weather but expect it will work great.

by:

Just what I needed to keep my arm from getting cramps from winding the stupid crank!

by:

Very easy to install and wire.

by:

Always fast shipping and exactly as des cribed!

  • Troubleshooting A Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack That Only Extends
If the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack # LC643589 was working before mounting and will only extend after being mounted then it leads me to believe that the ground connection isn't good. I recommend disconnecting your ground wire from wherever you currently have it and crimp on a new ring terminal and use a self-tapping screw to mount it directly to the frame of the trailer.

  • How to Wire Lippert Smart Electric Jack to 7-Way
The Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack # LC643589 that you referenced is a great option to upgrade/replace the manual jack on your 2015 Pacific Coachworks Tango 21 foot Travel Trailer. You'll just want to make sure the new jack is of equal or higher capacity, and measures similar to the jack you're replacing. The Smart Jack uses standard hardware to install and ground to your trailer's A-frame. Then, to power the jack, you'll just use the single wire coming out of the jack and run...

  • Is Cover Needed for Lippert LC643589 Smart Jack A-Frame Powered Trailer Jack
The Lippert # LC643589 Smart Jack is designed to be fully exposed to the elements, so using a cover for it isn't necessary, but there's no reason why you couldn't use one if you wish. A cover like # UF38-944026 could indeed be used, but if you decide to do so, I'd only tighten up the draw string enough so that the cover won't get blown off. If you tighten it any further than that, the condensation that can build up might not be able to evaporate. Also, you'll want to avoid using a power...

  • Will Ram 2500 Truck Still Benefit from Using Weight Distribution
1,100 lbs of tongue weight is quite a bit of tongue weight even for a 2500 series Ram truck. Some people probably get by without WD in your situation but your best towing experience will be to use the system you have. One thing that makes using the systems a bit easier is a powered A-frame jack. What you can do is jack the tongue of the trailer up with the powered jack while the trailer is connected to the hitch ball and this will make getting the springs bars onto and off of the hangers...

  • Troubleshooting Lippert Smart Jack Issue with Unwarranted Retracting and Extending
There should be a serial number on the replacement jack. This is how it can be tracked that it has been replaced by the manufacturer. The new jacks are not having the same issue because the issue was water entering the unit causing a circuit issue and they have updated seals to keep the water out of the housing. I haven't heard of issues with the replacement jack if it has been replaced, I definitely recommend going back to the dealer because you are having the issue they were supposed...

This jack includes a memory function allowing you to set it to the hitch height for your truck. This allows you to more easily hook up when it time to leave the campground. Unfortunately, Lippert doesn't offer replacement parts for the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack w/ Footplate # LC643589 so the only way to get them would be to take them off of another Lippert Smart Jack. Sounds like the screw or the motor of the Lippert Smart Jack # LC643589 is damaged or has an internal issue. spoke to my contact at Lippert and they confirmed that the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack # LC643589 does not require any grease maintenance. I'm sorry the folks at the establishment you purchased the Lippert Smart Jack # LC643589 from were unable to help you. That is basically the issue 99% of the time when this occurs. Should that not remedy the problem, remove the fuse in the power wire for 15 minutes which will reset it.
