How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I have used this for one year now - shoulder and back saver. I added some crimp end loops and power it by my jumper batter / cables. Super easy and did not have to add a battery to trailer frame. My tongue weight is close to 1,000lbs. Old manual crack was 75-100 revolutions. Now I push a button.

Very fast shipping and easy transaction! Always use etrailer!

THE BEST TRAILER JACK I

by:

Love it so far - very happy.

by:

Very reliable. Product is strong. My boat is heavy, the tougue weight is about 750 lbs, and this lift it like nothing.

by:

Awesome no more cranking and wearing out this old shoulder.

by:

Installation was a breeze and only required a few common household tools....

As you can see by the before and after pictures the finished product looks great and works better than I anticipated AND the best part about my new electric trailer jack is no more cranking on that old manual trailer jack.

by:

easy to install, great sharkskin finish ,works perfectly on my 7000# camper trailer, quiet very pleased with this jack.

by:

Used on Hoosier pontoon trailer (BX325TT-12).
Clamped
to center 4 x 3" tube.

Jack has worked flawlessly. Since it was installed it has been used no less than 9 times. Works great with & without boat on trailer.

by:

I installed this on my aluminum trailer that met the tongue weight criteria. I have ordered a solar panel to place on top of the storage box to maintain the battery.

by:

For a couple in their 60s, this electric jack on our 11,000lbs boat keeps allows us to continue enjoying the sport of boating.

by:

When first used it didn’t work, put a snowmobile battery hooked up and it started working now it works off the truck as it should

by:

This is a very effective trailer jack. Easy to mount...easy to operate. Plenty of power to lift the bow of my 23' Sea Chaser. The older I get, the more lazy I get. (LOL) So this is the perfect tongue jack. I connected mine to a small solar charger and a small 12 volt battery and it's ready to go whenever I need it. Very nice jack. No problems so far. Highly recommended. The only small setback is that you have to align the hitch ball very close to the tongue...it's not easy to move the tongue over to the hitch. I guess that goes with the territory. If you're good at backing up to it, it takes less time. Maybe if it came with a wheel(s) rather than the pancake stand...it may make it even better.

Used 6x bought 6 months ago and stopped working. No light at all. There is no information any where on how to troubleshoot this. I emailed customer support and the company is a joke. I have since emailed 4x asking for help and for them to contact me with any info. Can you imagine a jack failing like this and them never answering your contacts. The only email I got was we received your email and our warranty group is busy right now. That’s it. Jacks are so important to using your RV don’t trust your precious time or headaches to a company that doesn’t stand behind their products. I had read other bad reviews but decided to try it thinking I would get a few years but it didn’t even last 6 months. And I thought the company would stand behind the product but I was so wrong.

Easy to install, Easy to operate

by:

Installed on 14’ open/flat bed, tandem wheel trailer, for non-marine use. Trailer stored outside when not in use. No deterioration from being in the elements. Looks new. Easy to install. Has functioned flawlessly during first year of use.

Reliable. No issues 1 yr+ service. Well worth cost in reduced effort ability to easily manage challenges of uneven, wet terrain without frustration.

by:

My husband hurt his back and could no longer help me hitch and unhitch their boat, and I was really struggling to do it by myself... this motorized jack was an answer to my prayers. I have a 20’ Mastercraft X2 wakeboard boat and this jack handles it without any issue. My husband used the included wires to hook up a connection which plugs into the connection at the back of the truck where the trailer lights connect- I think this might take some electrical knowledge but works great for us.

by:

due to shoulder problems, i decided to replace my manual jack with this. Glad i did!! This item is great and very easy to operate. I wont have another boat trailer without one

by:

The jack arrived a day early. A nice start. Installed easily with no surprises. Lifts our two horse trailer effortlessly.

by:

The first one I bought broke, remounted the second one on the trailer further forward on the trailer reducing the weight. Works great.

by:

Works great!

by:

it was very easy to install and it works great, a lot easier than cranking the trailer wheel up or down

Thank you for your review! Our customer service team should be reaching out to you in the near future.

by:

Works well as it should! No problems at all 1 year out. As I have it powered by the same power as my trailer tilt battery, it is always powered for use. I don’t really use the light so no comment there. Adequate lift with a well loaded trailer. I do wish it was a little faster, but not a big issue.

by:

Amazing so far and wishing I had done this a LONG time ago! It's understandably slowish, but who cares. Super easy. Flip the switch and sit back. I power mine with a portable jumper box from Harbor Freight so I don't have to worry about a battery getting stolen off the trailer.

  • Can Wheel Be Added To Fulton XLT Powered Drive Trailer Jack F141401?
I may have a different option for you, but there is not a wheel kit available for the Fulton XLT Powered Driver Trailer Jack # F141401 you were looking at. The above jack is the only powered side mount jack offered but since no wheel is available you will need to decide on if you want a wheel or the power jack. If you decide having a wheel is more important I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Square Swivel Jack w/ 3" Wide Wheel - Sidewind - 12" Lift - 1,700 lbs # DL22339 due to it having the...

  • What is the Amp Draw From the Fulton XLT 141401 Electric Trailer Jack
The maximum amperage that the Fulton XLT jack # F141401 will draw is 15amps, so a 12v battery with at least 150 amp hour rating would be optimal to ensure that it's properly powered and also is not going to draw down too much with frequent use over the course of the day. You will want this to be a dedicated battery for the trailer.

That weight rating is usually measured at the tongue of the trailer and, depending on you tongue weight, should still be a viable option. We do have an array of heavier duty manual jacks, however. • Where are Bracket Height Measurements of Fulton XLT Marine Jack Measured From
The bracket height dimensions of the Fulton trailer jack # F141401 that you referenced are measured from center of the mounting bracket of the jack down to the bottom of the jack foot. So it would be 9-3/4 inches from center of bracket to ground retracted and 31-3/4 inches when extended. This does mean you could get your trailer's tongue 31-3/4 inches off of the ground.
