Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Friction Sway Control

The included friction-style sway control unit reduces trailer sway caused by winds, passing traffic, curving roads, or sudden maneuvers. As soon as your trailer begins to move out of line, the friction pads inside the unit touch one another and create resistance to help prevent further side-to-side movement. To install the unit, simply mount the ball-and-plate assembly to your trailer's frame with the included self-tapping screws, and attach the sway control ball to the head of your weight distribution hitch. Then attach the bar to both of the balls and secure it in place with the included clips.

Forged Steel Spring Bars

The round spring bars are made from forged steel, giving them a distinct advantage over typical cast steel bars. Forging is a process where thermal and mechanical energy are applied to the steel, resulting in a finished product that is more resilient to impacts and is stronger in terms of shear strength. Simply put, these spring bars do a superior job of helping to hold your trailer in line because of their added strength and durability.

Built-In Grease Zerks

Built-in grease zerk on the Curt weight distribution system head assembly

The system's head features 2 built-in grease zerks so that you can easily lubricate the spring bars without having to remove them from the head assembly. The grease zerks are located on each of the shafts that encase the spring bars. Simply use a grease gun (sold separately) to inject grease into each of the zerks.

The hitch pin is 3" long, not long enough to work with standard equipment class 5 recievers. This kit should be shipped with a 4" long pin. Plan to order your own, etrailer would not replace the 3" pin. I now have to buy a seperate hitch pin. This is the first time etrailer has let me down.

This WD system comes with a hitch pin that will fit standard 2 inch receivers. A class V hitch can be a 2, 2.5, or 3 inch receiver. From the picture of your receiver it appears to have a reducer sleeve which indicates it is a 2.5 inch receiver which often needs a longer pin. We do have a a pin, part # 337HP6256WC, which would work.

This beast is still pulling 8k lbs with maxxed out tongue weight without trouble. Over 3k miles and looking to double that soon.

With this hitch system, it really felt like our 35ft TT wasnt even there. Another year of abuse and no signs of letting up. No swaying on the interstate, complete control on the craziest of back roads and mountain climbs, and just a level, balanced and smooth dream of a ride. Couldnt ask for a better product.

Excellent product(Curt Weight Distribution & Sway control) at a great price. Install was a breeze. Hoping to use it for many years to come. Thanks etrailer.com for the great product at a great price and very fast shipping. It's great to find such great service these days.

No problems at all. Went from Arkansas to Arizona and here and there and in between. Worked excellently.

by:

The hitch is of high quality. It took me about 45 minutes with double checking everything, I didn’t have to mount the sway bar ball on trailer, already had one. I’ve only put about fifty miles on it just to test and get the feel of it, I’m vary happy with! First photo standered hitch 3/4 lift, second photo Curt distribution hitch and sway bar.

Bought it and never used the hitch and stabilizer. Storm totaled my camper. Product is well constructed and would recommend to anyone needing one

by:

This Curt Weight Distribution system is great, pulled my 6K Travel trailer With ease, Leveled my 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 the way it should.
I had a Reese 49901 Weight Distribution system with 550 TW and trailer has a 844lb TW, The Reese 49901 is Obsolete and the spring bars, I had asked if Curt 1000lb spring bars would fit and Curt quoted me not to mix Curt with Reese.
Well I measured both Reese 49901 and the Curt C17062 they are the SAME, With in .005+/-.

NOTE:I could of just bought the Curt 1,000TW bars and used them on my Reese 49901 Weight Distribution system

by:

Bought this hitch to haul my new trailer with all of my home belongings from MA to TX. 1750 miles one way for this trip. This hitch performed perfectly. Without it, I feel the truck would have been much less stable and the weight would have had more effect on the drive quality. Would highly recommend!

by:

After 1 year and over 5000 miles, the Curt hitch and weight distribution system is working great. Thanks for the recommendation from etrailer based on my trailer weight and needs.

by:

The package had both ends ripped out and was only held together by one strip of packing tape even though when I placed the order by phone I specifically asked that the package would be reinforced since this has been a problem noted in other reviews. Luckly the contents were still intact. Upon reviewing the assembly instructions from Curt I realized that they hadn't included any torque specs for the fasteners WTF ?. This is a trailer hitch rated up to five tons and the instructions don't have torque specs for the fasteners, guess I'll just hand tighten them. I tried calling the 800 number on the instruction sheet twice and ended up getting some spam company that tried to sell me emergency medical equipment twice and then got blocked. Maybe they need to update the instructions, include the correct phone number along with some torque specs for the fasteners.I'm taken back by the sloppy packaging and instructions so far and can't give Curt more than two stars no matter how well the installation goes. Maybe I should of purchased a Reese instead.

It is possible that you had received an outdated set of instructions. On the product page below the specs is a link to the most recent instructions that do include torque ratings for the hardware.

by:

For the price you can’t beat this hitch system. Used it twice already, towed on I-10 in Az with very heavy truck traffic. The sway control bar made a big difference. Set up is very easy. The only drawback is you have to disconnect sway bar to backup.

by:

The Curt Hitch setup works great and after towing over 120 days this past year, I have had no problems. The only thing I would improve on is probably impossible (the weight of the components).

by:

I heard from a nephew that I need a weight distribution hitch in order to safely haul my new (used) camper. He showed me what he had and I thought it all made sense and figured I could get one installed in no time. Well, it took a little longer than I planned. I watched videos, called etrailer and experimented a bit. I believe it's all set now, first camping trip in 2 weeks. I feel confident this will make my drive much more enjoyable. This hitch is so heavy duty and with the grease fittings to keep it lubed, I'm sure this will do the trick for many years. Follow directions, watch videos and if you still need help, call etrailer and they will get you the answers you need.

by:

After 1 year of running...I have to say this is a good set up. It needs tightening once in a while but it's holding up great. Clips for the bars are a little brittle...I had to replace both of them and the replacement was tedious. But over all - I am very happy with it.

by:

Product great, but first one showed up with a large hole in the box and refused delivery. I called E Trailer within 30 minutes and no questions asked sent a replacement.

by:

High quality. Nice paint finish, nice chrome finish. Easy to follow instructions.

by:

Etrailer was great to work with, nice site, shipped quick. My first load leveling anti sway hitch so I can't compare but doing as I expected, quality is great. Only complaint is removing bars is a pain, better plan on having a screwdriver to release the catch, can't do it with your fingers, liked it well enough to buy a second for the other truck and trailer.

Great, very happy with my purchase

by:

The hitch kit arrived in record time and didn't cost me a thing extra! The chains were already attached which cut down on assembly time. Although the instructions are a little confusing when it comes to measurements and where to measure and when, but they seem to be complete. The only thing negative I can say is be prepared to pull the hitch head off the shank a couple times to adjust the number of washers (as it does say that in the instructions). I assembled mine per instructions (except I tightened the head bolts too soon) figuring with the ball tilted back just a little, it would hook right up. Turns out, I cant even attach the last link to the clevis as it is too far back. Sooooo tomorrow I will take the head apart and remove a couple washers on the rivet and try it again. Overall, I think it will do a fine job in distributing the weight through out the truck vs all in the rear. The friction bar was easy to install too. Our camper already had a sway control at one point, so all the holes were there. We did purchase an additional Curt friction bar for the drivers side and installed it too. We haven't towed the camper yet with this set up (as stated above, its not quite assembled correctly yet) but am planning on the maiden voyage this weekend. Thanks ETRAILER for another sweet deal on quality products!

7/5/2017

Still working Great! The only negative thing I have seen is there are some marks where the friction bars have contacted the hitch head, so either the ball mounts on the trailer are too low, or the hitch head is tilted back too far to properly accommodate the friction bars correctly.

The angle of the hitch head may be a factor, but commonly we see damage to the anti-sway bars when they are not removed while backing-up. This system is not designed to be used while backing up your trailer.

Great product, good instructions

by:

Going on a year, and this hitch is great and a good value. The problem I had with the hitch I'd had previously was that the arms were too heavy for me to manage. I think this hitch works better for my implementation (I tow 30 feet with a Chevy Tahoe) than the old one, plus I can handle the entire thing myself. I feel in control even in high wind. Also- great service from e-trailer. A few weeks ago, one of the arms got stuck and customer service was able to help me solve the problem.

Well made and heavy duty. The Curt MV Weight Distribution System is complete with nothing else to buy. Great price, fast shipping. Shipping package wasn't strong enough to support the heavy weight. Although the carton was in bad shape when it arrived there was no damage.

Great product. I would never tow my 26’ box trailer without it. Equalizer Hitch is the only way to go and the Curt unit is great.

by:

Sorry I don't have a picture now put the Curt Weight Distribution hitch with the sway control is a great hit with me. I've had others on a different trailer but no where near a good a this one, I couldn't be happier made the truck level and never swayed at all.

Andrew S.

4/26/2018

This is a better weight distribution hitch than I ever owned and I have had at least 5. The sway is nothing like I had before you dont even feel the trailer moving.

by:

Received the Product on time and in perfect shape. E Trailer is the go to place.
I have always had good service with Curt products. The Hitch package was as described.
For my money I don't believe you will find a better 1,000 / 10,000 lb. hitch, only more expensive.

Ernest

7/16/2019

Works great. It is on a new trailer now that is six feet longer than the original. I transferred the whole hitch. I dont need to tighten the sway bar often the hitch is that good.

by:

Everything is excellent. Product is just as expected. Be prepared for it to be on the heavy side. I think my ups driver is ok but looked like he was struggling real good getting it to my porch. I really like that it has the grease fittings. After initial set up it looks like it will be easy to use.

Matt

3/3/2019

After using it for a year I have to say it far exceeded my expectations. The level system does everything it is suppose to and properly greases it has held up great. I am very thankful for this kit. The alternative on my ram 1500 was a very expensive suspension upgrade to haul my 27ft toy hauler. Thank you

by:

The product was decent but the packaging was absolutely trashed when it arrived and held together by plastic wrap. Part of the hitch was scraped up and one of the brackets was bent when I tried to install it on my trailer. Overall not bad, just annoying to have to replace the brackets.

  • Should Vehicle Sit Level When Weight Distribution System is Used and Set Up
You'll want to use the amount of links that allows the tow vehicle to sit as close to level as possible. So in your case you'd want to use 6 links since you said that gives you the more level height. Since your weight distribution system is rated for 500 to 800 lbs and your tongue weight is 600 you're good in that regard as well.
