Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Great job getting here so fast. Nice wheels and tires!

by:

Nice upgrade from the 12's that were on before (after some modifications to the trailer.) Like the speed rating and added diameter to help preserve the bearings.

by:

Nice looking tires and wheels.

by:

Mike was super helpful about guiding me the correct tire/wheel size a making sure I had the correct hub size to match.

by:

I ordered these for my 1997 Jayco 1207 KB popup camper. I ordered item K71-723-01 to provide extra clearance for the tires. Everything shipped quickly! I ordered three of these tires and wheels. They are all great and fit perfectly.

by:

Nice tires

by:

These wheels and tires still look new after a year. The trailer does not get moved often, but just the same, I am confident all will be well when I do move it.

by:

Order arrived on time and was exactly what I wanted.

by:

Incredibly good product and price. Excellent service.

by:

Seem great so far! Bought them for a camper I built. Was planning on going from Indiana to Yellowstone last summer with them. But then COVID hit and National Parks closed. We have done some more local trips of 25-100 miles and worked great so far.

by:

Always fast service , products are good

by:

Went up from 12" to 13" wheels and decided on these because of their speed rating (M 81 mph). Perfect fit onto existing hubs. 2500 miles from Florida to Nova Scotia, Canada at mostly 65 mph. No problems. Tires did not get excessively hot, could always touch with full palm.
Fast delivery from e-trailer.

by:

These tires are fantastic after 1 year and 2600 miles the tires still look brand new. I believe that these tires will last another year and 2600 more miles. For the last 15 years I have been getting around 1200 miles out of a set of tires, I love to fish so my trailer goes everywhere. yes I will buy these again.

the tires still look new and have 4100 miles on them fantastic

by:

I was very pleased with the tire ordering process, it was easy to understand. The tires were shipped and received in a timely manner. My only concern is with the age of the tires. The tires were mfg. 51 of 17 since it is now 5 of 19 the tires are already 17 months old. Your website recommends a life expectancy of trailer tires to be 7 years that would be 84 months. So the tires I got have already gone through 20% of their life expectancy. My reference number is107755102

Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured a year or more before we received them. These tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they can sit in a warehouse for months until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can take a month or even more. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years, assuming theyre not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The product warranty begins at the date of purchase, not the date of manufacture.

  • Replacing a B78-14 Trailer Tire With 175/80-13 Trailer Tire
I would be willing to bet you have the standard 4 on 4" bolt pattern but you can check this using the attached photo/article. If it turns out you do have a 4 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern then I would not have any options for you save for replacing the hub but if you have the standard 4 on 4" bolt pattern then you can use the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel part # AM3S120 which has an 81 mph speed rating and 1,360 lb weight capacity. The ST175/80D13 tire is 24.02" diameter...

  • Tire / Wheel Recommendation For Pop-Up Camper With 4 On 4 Bolt Pattern
We do offer a few options for tire/wheel combos that may work for your camper. We have the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire, part # AM3S120 that has a white 8-spoke steel wheel. This tire has a 6 ply rating and a 1,360 maximum load at 50 psi. For a tire wheel with the same characteristics except the wheel has a galvanized finish, you would order part # AM3S130. I have attached product review videos for both of these combos you can check out.

The 5.30-12 tire size is 21.9 inches in diameter and has a section width of 5.6 inches. The 175/80-13 has a diameter of 24.1 inches and a section width of 7 inches. So basically as long as you have room between the frame and the inside of your current tire for 3.5 more inches, and have room for 1.5 more inches between the top of your current tire and the fender you should be good. For a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern rim and tire you would want the part # AM31985, for a 4 on 4 inch bolt...

Unlike traditional leaf spring suspension systems, you'll get a smooth and stable ride regardless of load size due to the progressive-rate main springs. This will perfect for trailers with delicate loads. For your 10 inch wheels with 4 on 4 bolt pattern the center pilot hole of the wheel could be 2.8 inches. If it is then you can use center cap # AM90113. If it has the smaller 2.5 inch pilot hole then this cap will not fit. That is the only option that we carry that could potentially fit a 10 inch wheel. • Can I Upgrade To Larger Tires/Wheels If Space Is Not An Issue
If space is not an issue, then yes, you sure can. Our rule of thumb is that you want at least 3" of clearance between the tire and the fender or wheel well. Then you want at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and the frame of the trailer. A lot of times the fender or wheel well area will limit what size tire you can use, but if you have enough space there is no reason you can't upgrade.
