How Much Clearance Is Needed To Upgrade From 4.80/4.00-8 To 4.80-12 Trailer Tires

Question:

Hi, I have 4.8inch X 8inch Kenda loadstar load B on my 1976 Cox boat trailer for my 13 ft Boston Whaler. I have roughly 4inch of clearance from the tire to the fender, can I safely upsize to the 12inch wheels? Looking for 4 lug wheel. Will this work? Any suggestions? Usually tow my boat 500 miles twice a year. Thanks!

A 4.80/4.00-8 trailer tire like part # AM10002 measures 16.1" in diameter. A 4.80-12 trailer tire like part # TT48012C measures 20.6" in diameter. Therefore, you'll need to account for an increase in height of 2.25". The recommend clearance from a trailer tire to the fender is around 3". If you do choose to upgrade, I recommend the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel part # AM30620.
