Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

The tires are great, nothing out of the ordinary, but they arrived quickly and met my needs exactly.

What I am more impressed with is etrailer's service. I've ordered a few things over the past few years, and in a world where the customer often comes last, etrailer has been top notch with service and communication. I even cancelled an order once because I changed plans. They took care of that immediately, reimbursing my card, no questions asked.

I'm doing this review because I received an email asking me to -- one year after ordering the product. That's smart! Most places want you to review before you've even had a chance to use it. Thanks!

I was surprised to get an invitation to review these tires about a year after purchase. That is a pretty rare commitment to quality and that makes me a pretty big fan of etrailer that's for sure!
When I originally purchase these I recall they were on a back order and took some time to come in, but etrailer was communicative throughout and honored the price at the time of the order even though tire prices were skyrocketing at the time and had gone up considerably by the time they were able to ship. They really are a class act.

As for the tires they are great too!

I had purchased a couple of sets of load range C tires (4.10-8) on rims locally at a big box store prior to this set and had a bunch of problems. They'd air themselves down because of poor fitment to the rim, and dry-rotted and checked within a year of being on the trailer.

These tires on the other hand are excellent in every way. They fit the standard 8" rims properly and hold air and a year later they still look great. They have good side to side traction and handle loading very well. They seem to wear like iron. They are well balanced.

I used these as an up-grade option over 4.10-8 Load Range C tires mounting them myself (I've got a manual tire machine) on the same rims after carefully measuring for clearance on the trailer. This was a good choice for me as even though I don't try to overload the trailer these slightly larger tires provide a better ride under a full load and generally are a tougher tire and better riding.

They travelled 1,300 to KY from MD and back shortly after I mounted them. While in KY I helped my Mom take down an entire garden shed, hauling it, everything that was in it, and a lot of other junk to the landfill in my small trailer (multiple trips). There were times where if I wasn't overloading the trailer, I was definitely at the bitter edge. I felt a lot more confident with these shoes on the trailer than I ever had with any other.

All in all these tires have my confidence and my recommendation!

One year later and these tires have been great.

by:

Excellent fast service and great customer service always packaged well

by:

Actually, came a day earlier than originally quoted. Tire sidewalls were a little deformed out of the box, but went on the rims ok.

by:

Great ordering experience. Items delivered quickly and in great condition. Will order from etrailer again.

Tire 5.70-8etrailer offers a great price on products and shipping. Shipping is fast. Quality of products offered is great. I stumbled across their website when I was searching for new trailer tires (tires only) and glad I did. Plus, good to see they are a local company (in the same state).

by:

I bought these tires to replace the old cracked ones on one of my sailbost trailers. Good tires at a good price. These tires are as good as any on the market today. Beware of some of the tire sellers out on the market. I bought from e-trailer because I can trust there products. etrailer sells good stuff at good prices.

I have yet to use these items but the date stamped on tires showed a very recent manufacturer date, it shows your inventory is current and the shipping was extremely fast. If anything changes I will update but very happy with etrailer and will use again .

by:

These guys know how to ship tires. The tires came in a heavy wall box made for the size of tires. They were not flat or smooshed like the other 10 times I've gotten b.s. shipped tires before and the prices were good. Will definitely order from here again.

by:

  • Can taller Trailer Tires be Used in Place of 4.80-8 Trailer Tires
There is one other tire size that will fit the same wheel size as your 4.80-8 tires and that is size 5.70-8. This size will be about 2 inches taller and 1.2 inches wider than the tires you have now. You will need to make sure that you have enough space all around the existing tires for the larger size. The 5.70-8 tires in load range C and D will have a higher capacity than a 4.80-8 load range B and C. Tire # AM10012 for example is rated for 910 pounds at 75 psi. But even though the tires...

  • Tallest Trailer Tire that Can Replace a 4.80-8 Size Tire

A 5.70-8 load range B tire has a capacity of 715 lbs, which is 1430 lbs per pair. If the weight of the trailer exceeds that amount, then you'd want to go with the load range C, with a 910 lb capacity (1820 per pair). Even if the weight of your trailer doesn't exceed the capacity of the load range B, I'd recommend going with the higher load range. If you just need the tire, go with part # AM10012. If you wanted a wheel/tire combo, use part # AM30140 which is a 5.70-8 Load Range C tire on...

This 165/65-8 tire size is the modern equivalent to the sizes listed on your current tires and they are compatible with your existing wheels. This tire features a load capacity of 800 pounds at 70 psi and is designed specifically for off-road and agricultural applications. This tire is 5.9 inches wide. This tire will be 18 inches diameter when inflated and is rated for 910 lbs at 75 psi. This tire will not only be wider but will almost be 2 inches taller raising your trailer by about 1 inch. For any other tire, you would also need to replace the wheel.

Load Range for tires is a way for the manufacturers to organize the relative weight capacities of their tires by size. Basically every tire size will have it's own capacity for a Load Range B for example but all that really matters is that the capacity of the tires is adequate for the weight of the trailer and it's cargo.
