Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A year already? No tire changing can make for a mighty speedy summer. I will look to these for my next round of tires. Round... Tires... Get It?

by:

These tires are great! More importantly, the customer service I received from eTrailer was outstanding! I did quite a bit of research to find the best price on the tire size I needed for my trailer. eTrailer had the best price, the purchasing process was quick and easy and the tires shipped quickly. I would buy from eTrailer again in a heartbeat!

by:

Anna was extremely helpful. Your shipment time is great.

by:

These are my 2nd set of tires for this trailer. The EXACT same perfect tires as the 1st time & the EXACT same perfect customer service as 7 years ago. Never had a flat & they still hold air, but I am being proactive by getting new 1's before tragedy strikes. Yep, I haul really heavy material regularly & they still lasted 7 years which is amazing! Very HAPPY!! Thank You

Great. Cant wait to get back to work in spring...

by:

The two Kenda Loadmaster mounted tires I ordered were a perfect fit for my vintage Coleman Colonial pop-up camper. I discovered my old tires were in poor condition when having the bearings repacked. I had a camping trip coming for which I had already paid a non-refundable camp site fee for specific dates. I was unable to find these wheels on short notice locally. etrailer came to my rescue and my new wheels were on my porch within 3 days. They were fully inflated and the rims looked great in their white powder coat not to mention the great tread. These new rims and tires will give me great peace of mind as I pull my camper from Cincinnati to Oshkosh through busy Chicago traffic. The fast service and quality product was much appreciated!

by:

I experienced great support when purchasing these wheels and they fit my trailer perfectly. Thanks!

  • Trailer Rim Availability that is 8 inches in Diameter, 7 inches in Width and has 4 Bolt Pattern
For a trailer wheel that is 8 inches in diameter that has 7 inches of width and a bolt pattern of 4 on 4 inch we have the part # AM20021. As long as your current wheels have a zero offset like this wheel it would clear your frame the same way. To help equalize the load that a trailer wheel carries manufacturers almost always give trailer wheels a zero offset of one very near it. For a version of this with a tire on it that is sized 215/60-8 you would want the part # AM3H290.

  • Is There a 215/60-8 Load Range D Bias Trailer Tire & White Wheel With 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern
There is an option for a 215/60-8 load range D bias trailer tire and 8" white wheel with a 4 on 4" bolt pattern, but they come separate so you'd need to get the tire mounted to the wheel. The correct parts for this are the following: - Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 215/60-8 - Load Range D # AM1HP28 - Steel Trailer Wheel - 8" x 7" Rim - 4 on 4 - White # AM20021 Then for the valve stem you will need the Americana High Pressure Rubber Snap-In Valve Stem # AM20904. • Finding Replacement Wheel With Correct Pilot Hole To Switch From 12 Inch To 13 Inch Wheel/Tire
As long as your trailer hub uses lug nuts, the pilot hole will not effect mounting your wheel to the trailer hub because the lugs will center the wheel on the hub. The only time you have to match up the pilot hole is when your hub uses lug bolts, which then would use a hub-centric wheel. You will need to measure the bolt pattern of your trailer to determine the correct wheel you will need for your trailer (see FAQ). You will also want to make sure that you will have clearance from the...

  • Replacing A 16.5 x 6.5 - 8 Wheel/Tire With A 18.5 x 8.5 - 8 Wheel/Tire
In order to account for the new tire and wheel size, you will want to take a few measurements. A 16.5 x 6.5 - 8 wheel is 5.3" wide with an overall height of 16.5". A 18.5 x 8.5 - 8 wheel is 7" wide with an overall height of 18.3". Therefore, the 18.5 x 8.5 - 8 setup will be 1.6" wider and 1.8" taller than the 16.5 x 6.5 - 8 setup. Please note that you will want to allow for 4.5" of clearance between the top of the tire and the bottom edge of the fender for proper suspension travel. If...

  • Installing Larger Tires on Boat Trailer with 4.80-8 Tires
You can use larger 4-on-4 wheels/tires on your boat trailer as long as you keep about 2-1/2-inches clearance above the tires to allow for normal suspension travel. Your 4.80-8 tires are 16-inches in diameter and the nearest larger size on a 4-on-4 wheel is 215/60-8 part # AM3H290 which is 18.3-inches in diameter. This tire will reduce you fender clearance by about an inch. If you refer to the linked article on tire sizes you'll be able to see the various sizes and their load ratings and...

  • Which 4.80 X 8 Size Tires Can Be Used On A Minuteman Trailer To Maximize Tire Tread Life
The 4.80x8 tire size has a overall diameter of 16.1 inches and a section width of 4.6 inches. I would not recommend going to the 5.70x8 size or the 215/60-8 size, because you would be increasing the overall diameter to 18.1 inches, which is 2 inches taller. When you go to a taller tire you are making the trailer taller and that will increase the chance of more sway, as well as possibly causing clearance issues. I would recommend going with the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with...

  • Is There a Larger Tire Size Than 5.70-8 For an 8 Inch Wheel
The 5.70-8 tire size is about the largest diameter tire available for an 8 inch rim. Your current tire is about 18 inches in diameter and has a tread width of 5.9 inches. A 215/60-8 tire is about the same diameter, but has a wider tread width at 8.9 inches. Because of the increased tire width, you wouldn't be able to reuse your existing wheels. You'd need to go with a wider wheel, or use a wheel/tire combo like part # AM3H290 for a 4 on 4 bolt pattern with a Load Range C tire or # AM3H310...

  • Availability of Narrower Tires for Snowmobile Trailer for Better Handling
I'd recommend going with a 12 inch wheel with a ST145/R12 tire on it, like the # AM35354. The ST145/R12 has a diameter only 1 inch larger than your existing tires, so it'll only raise your trailer height by 1/2 an inch. I've linked you to our selection in that tire size/wheel configuration. You'll want to choose a wheel with the desired finish with the properly rated tires. You'll want tires you choose to have a combined capacity that exceeds the weight of the trailer and its contents.

  • 215/60-8 Trailer Tire and Wheel Combo with a 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern
Take a look at Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM3H290. It is the same size and a load range C rated for 935 pounds at 50 psi. It has a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. In this size, 215/60-8, there are only 5 on 4-1/2 and 4 on 4 bolt patterns. I have included a link to our tire FAQ article for you. For an 8-ply tire, there is no combo available with the tire already mounted on the wheel but you can get # AM1HP28 and wheel # AM20021 and have a local tire shop mount the tire on the wheel.

  • What is a Pilot Hole in a Trailer Tire and Wheel Combination Like Kenda Tire and Wheel # AM3H290
The pilot diameter refers to the center hole on a tire/wheel combo like # AM3H290. This is important if the wheel is centered on the hub as opposed to the lug nuts centering the wheel. It would also matter if the pilot hole was smaller than your existing wheels. A larger hole will be fine as long as the wheel is not hub piloted. In this case, the cart has a larger pilot hole so the smaller 2.5 inch hole may not fit. Other factors when choosing a wheel/tire combo include the bolt pattern...

  • Trailer Tire And Recommendation For 8x8 Foot Trailer Carrying 2 800cc ATVs
After some research, I have found that based on the weight of the 2 ATVs and your trailer, a tire with a load range of C (a 6 ply rated tire with a maximum load of 1760 lbs at 50 psi) is a compatible fit for your trailer. The size you referenced 18.5/8.5-8 is an older style of tire sizing. The newer version of that is 215/60-8. The wheel used on the # AM3H290 has a zero offset, which means that the mounting plate of the wheel that sits against the face of the hub is in the center of the width of the wheel. Because the tire is about 9 inches at its widest, you'd be looking at about 4-1/2 inches from the inside of rim where it bolts to hub to the tire surface closest to the trailer frame.
