You'll Need More than Just Zinc to Fight Rust

The simple truth is that salt can be highly corrosive to metal when exposure lasts for an extended period oftime. So, the more you tow around it, the more you need to protect your trailer from it.

A rusted jack welded to a trailer frame

Dutton-Lainson's specially formulated TUFFPLATE finish on this jack helps to ensure that it doesn't end up looking like the one pictured above. TUFFPLATE offers 3 layers of corrosion protection. The first layer is a specially formulated zinc finish. The second layer is chromate. Finally, a sealer puts a third barrier between the jack's gleaming good looks and anything that can contribute to rust, like freshwater or even saltwater exposure.

Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount oftime it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. Zinc plating typically begins to deteriorate after about 100 hours. Dacromet usually lasts for around 300 to 400 hours. Dutton-Lainson's TUFFPLATE finish lasted nearly 500 hours in the salt spray test before the first appearance of rust (about 30% longer than a traditional powder coat finish). As for the first appearance of white corrosion, it performed about as well as typical zinc finishes.

The environment this test creates is much harsher than anything you'll ever experience in your journeys, but it provides a testament to how well this jack resists rust and corrosion.

How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack lifts your trailer high enough at the tongue to allow you to couple it with your vehicle. Usually, your tongue weight is about 10-15% of your gross trailer weight (GTW). For example, a 10,000-lb trailer has atongue weight of 1,000 lbs to 1,500 lbs. To raise the tongue of a trailer this size, you'd need a jack that can handle a static load of no less than 1,500 lbs. And, yes, it's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time fishing.

This device is fairly heavy-duty, sturdy, and the swivel works easily and smoothly from horizontal to vertical and latches/unlatches easily. It adds flexibility to the trailer's built-in screw-up/down jack with a flat plate on its bottom. It allows me to move the trailer easier without having to lift up the front end. The customer service was great: a customer service rep got involved and expedited the order processing so it arrived a lot earlier that I expected from the website,. That's excellent customer service. Thanks!

Great! It makes it so much easier to hookupunhook my trailer.

by:

I needed one for my woodsplitter which has a 2”x2” tongue, this works great. It was easy to install and it makes raising and lowering my woodsplitter a breeze. I would highly recommend this product . I use my 4-wheeler to move my splitter and this works perfectly, glad I found it. thanks so much

by:

Problem was that regular Cargo trailer front Jack had to be removed every time I hooked it up behind Camper because of zero turning clearance to rear bumper.
Swing Jack installed closer inboard of hitch on Trailer frame and folded after hook up provides unlimited turning clearance. Added value was the ability to move trailer since Jack has large diameter wheel.
Special brackets allowed for easy installation. (no drilling/tapping of holes)

Delivery date as promised, good service.

Greatjack, much better than I had

Great jack. Has done well.

by:

I'm writing this review one year after purchasing. The original reason for buying was to allow room for a double hitch with a bike rack in it while towing a pop-up camper. It did the job well enough that I decided not to take it off & put the original back on. I don't trust it enough to turn the trailer on the wheel with the exception of perhaps on a smooth driveway and while not too-extended.

by:

I use this product on a shorelander boat trailer hauling a 16.5 ft Lund Mr. Pike.
I have had no problems with this wheel jack. In fact it has performed admirably for me.

by:

This took a small modification to my trailer as I had angle rails and not solid rails. But this has held up great. Sturdy design, ease of use!
I am very pleased with this product.

by:

Pro: Seems well built. The swivel is much heavier duty than the original that came with the trailer. Well packed and all the mounting hardware was present. Con: No grease fitting for lube.

It hasnt gotten a lot of use as its on a snowmobile trailer and we didnt have much snow. It has been outside all this time and no rust:

This was a replacement jack for the original which was accidently damaged and the new one works perfectly. I'm very happy with the jack, the ordering process and the overall experience with etrailer. I highly recommend this company.

After ~ 1 year, the trailer jack still works perfectly. Very satisfied wthe product and the etrailer company.

by:

After 1 year I can say that my Trailer Jack, Side wind Swivel Jack with 6" wheel has made this old guys job moving, hitching and storing so much easier. It is installed on my 16 foot cargo trailer (Motorcycler Hauler). We have travelled all over the Eastern USA and Canada taking in the Calbot Trail Nova Scotia and the Florida Keys. There has only been the wife and I and both in our 60's and we have no problems now moving the trailer loaded or unloaded and it moves and stores easily. Great Product!

This swing-back marine jack is a great buy and the materials are nice quality. I used this to replace my original 800lb. Fulton jack that came with my Shorelandr' double PWC trailer (long overdue). Since this jack is rated at 1200 lbs., I had to drill a larger hole on the trailer frame and on the jack swivel bracket, plus I had to move the pin from the right side to the left side of the jack (left side is meant for smaller pin/right side for larger/picture online is incorrect). This is a nicer jack than the original, the pin is heftier and the extra work was worth it. Time will tell how long it lasts around salt water.

by:

Trailer jack has functioning very good.
The
only problem is the finish is starting to corrode for some reason. I am going to try to put a coating of wax on it to see if it helps.

The trailer jack is only used in the spring summer and fall and is stored inside and has never been out in the weather. The trailer jack is always inside in the winter.
The finish is not adequate and I am not sure why the corrosion is taking place.

by:

Trailer tongue lift fit well, easy install, works great and I still using it.

This is a great product. Sadly it was made in China. At one time they were made in the United States. Hopefully, someday they will return production to the USA.

Working fine. Dont like it was made in China.

by:

I purchased two of these jacks to mount on my portable welders so they could be rolled around by hand in the shop. Both installed easily without reading the instructions and function flawlessly. Although manufactured in China, they are of good quality and will serve my purpose well. The welder in the photos weighs just over 1400 pounds and pushes/rolls very easily on the shop floor. etrailer.com and their usual outstanding service provided these at a good price shipped rapidly.

I will continue to use etrailer.com for my light trailer needs.

by:

This an extremely well made trailer tongue jack at a reasonable price. I especially like the 6" wheel. My previous jack did not have a wheel and this wheel makes it much easier to move the trailer by hand when I need too.

by:

Ordered this boat jack...was missing one of the brackets in the parts bag...I called and received great customer service...they looked up the missing part and sent a replacement out to me asap. Jack works great so far and installed easily. Thanks

by:

Easy enough switch out. Bolts are much longer than the original on mine so I felt like I was ratcheting forever, but that's what makes it a mostly universal fit. Take a look at your original bolts and see if you would rather use those to make install a little faster.

by:

The product is doing the job it was purchased to do.

The only negative on these galvanized products is that after a couple years they begin to show signs of rust on the surface that needs immediate attention.

by:

as described, easy to install ( no installation instructions included but offers from eTrailer to help & instructions/video on website), works great, A++++++

by:

Outstanding. This was ordered for my 6x12 enclosed dirt-bike hauler because a fold-up model gives much better ground clearance when going on rough dirt roads. It is well-designed and well-put-together. The installation was a breeze and it works perfectly. I strongly recommend this jack.

by:

This is a GREAT company to do business with. I have been burned many times ordering things over the interweb; but this company has it all together. I received my trailer jack in record time. It is just what I needed. The quality is exceptional for the low price I paid. I will recomend this company to everyone I know.
Thanks etrailer, sort of restores a persons faith in humanity!

  • Replacement Trailer Jack for Dutton Lainson Jack of Ranger Trailer
The only trailer jack we can recommend that would fit on the same frame mount as your 2012 Ranger trailer that has a Dutton Lainson jack currently is another DL jack like with the part # DL24MR since all of the jack manufacturers use slightly different mounts. • Does Dutton-Lainson Sidewind Swivel 1200 Pound Trailer Jack Have to be Lubricated
Jacks like # DL22300 come greased already and normally you would not need to add any grease unless excessive dirt, moisture, or corrosion got inside. Take the cap off of the top of the jack to inspect the gears. Inspecting the nut and screw inside would require removing these gears. If corrosion has built up on the screw and nut then that could be causing the problem. If additional grease is needed you will need to make sure to use a compatible grease or remove all the old grease before...

The overall height from the bottom of the wheel to the top of the jack, when fully retracted, measures 23-1/2 inches. Overall height on the jack I pulled from the warehouse measured about 33 inches so about 9-1/2 inches of travel. I imagine this will vary from jack to jack just by how the parts and screw inside are cut. If by pivot point you mean the point the jack rotates on to swing up when not in use, the measurement is 10-1/2 inches.

Electric jacks rarely have wheels on them because the wheel capacity is much lower than the jack capacity so it limits them if they have wheels.
