Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - 40038 Review

Today were going to take a look at the Curt 2-inch hitch ball, part number 40038. This hitch ball is 2 inches in diameter. It has a shank diameter of 1 inch, and a shank length of 2 inches. The wrench flats, as you can see here and here, are 1 5/8 of an inch apart. This item has a weight capacity of 12,000 pounds. It features fine threads for more holding strength.

It meets US V5 specifications and it is tested for safety. Now were going to bring in our ball mount and our trailer hitch demonstrator to show you how this would be installed. You would just slide the shank into the ball hole, place the washer, the washer and the nut do come with this item, and then finger tighten that, and once youve got that as tight as you can get it by finger tightening, you would get your wrench and tighten it the remainder of the way so you can use it with your trailer coupler and attach your trailer. That should do it for our Curt 2-inch hitch ball, part number 40038.

I neeed to pull a trailer with my 2019 GMC Yukon. I found Etrailer.com and followed the instructions on determining the drop of the hitch, the instructions were spot on. I hooked up my trailer to my Yukon today, all was level and worked perfectly.

I had driven around to Napa, Lowe’s, Home Depot and Walmart, and nobody had the 9” drop hitch I needed. Came back to Etrailer, bought the 2” ball and pin, and the Curt 9” drop hitch. I received the items quickly.

Great website,

Thanks,

Craig

by:

The Curt receiver, ball mount, ball, and wiring harness were all of excellent quality. Receiver bolt holes were perfectly aligned with SUV holes. Sturdy, heavy, and confidence building knowing my hitch is well built. I will now have peace of mind pulling a trailer.

by:

Great advice when I called for technical question about trailer balls -- answered by a live human who knew what they were talking about. This Hitchball has served us well over 9,000 miles of towing our Casita.

by:

Took me about three hours. The Hitch was easy(About an hour including getting the tools ready). Fit perfectly! A Little Harder installing it by myself from the garage floor but, it can be done! Cutting the plastic and re-installing it took some time. Over all very happy with the hitch. Will recommend to others!!

by:

Nice and shiny. Does exactly what it's supposed to.

by:

I received this hitch the next day during the vivid-19 pandemic. It was very easy to install.

2020 Subaru Outback
Pull the small rear panel off the bumper, remove 6 bolts and slip the hitch in between the bumper bar and the frame, tighten the new bolts in (not the stock bolts) and put everything back together. The reason there is a open hole on the hitch is because you cannot remove the bumper bar without removing the whole back end which would be a royal pain.

The brake wiring connector is right on the rear part of the spare tire compartment on the passenger side. It was hard to find but it just all snapped together.

Awesome product, awesome service!!

by:

Super impressed with the service and timeliness of your organization. Found y’all randomly on google and you are super legit. Helpful website, helpful recs, customer reviews. Customer service great too. Forgot part of my order (wiring harness) and it was overnighted, arrived on time. Everything on point. Keep it up.

The hitch itself was easy enough to install. Had to really use some PBlaster on the rear most holes and ended up needing an impact to get the job done. Beware kinda hard with just hand tools if the receiving holes are rusty,

by:

Instalation was pretty quick and easy, the completed installation worked great on my new trailer.

by:

it is what it is and looks well made. Havn't put 12000 lbs. on it yet but looks like it will handle it!

by:

I received the hitch and ball today! Fast shipping and looks great too!

by:

What to say about a hitch ball? It went on the mount easily and quickly. All parts and instructions were included, packaged well, and in perfect condition. Delivery was fast. Price was excellent and the customer services was even better! Thanks to Paula S. And etrailer for another great experience.

by:

Great service and product just like all the reviews say. Thanks a lot got the mount the ball and the lock arrived fast and fit perfect. I think they will work great.

by:

Yep, it's a 2" Hitch Ball.

by:

Seems like a quality piece that was made by someone who cared. The finish was even and consistant. The threads were smooth as silk without the slightest bind as the nut was threaded up the shank by hand. If it holds up in use (resists corrosion) it will be just that much better. The 12,000 lb load capacity should handle the 1,650 lb camper I'll be pulling :-)

by:

etrailer and all its folks continue to excel. This company firmly believes in "under promise, over perform". My recent order arrived earlier than expected...as usual.

by:

Solid product at a great price

by:

I benefited greatly from the information at etrailer.com when outfitting my new Honda Pilot with a trailer hitch, wire harness, hitch, and ball.
Everything was high quality, the video instructions for installation were perfect.
I saved just over $1000 compared to what the new car dealer would have charged me to install the same items.

Youre a great company at etrailer.com George. Super website. The Curt branded products I bought from you are great after one year.

Bought this heavy duty ball for extra security towing a 7000 GVWR dovetail. It fits the hitch and receiver insert perfectly and looks new after several 100 mile tows.

by:

It fit the task. Quality seems good.

by:

Recieved the 3 hitch balls as promised. Needed the different sizes for different applications. Was able to get a good selection from etrailer and filled all my needs. Fair price and great product.

Product has been working great with no issues. Have enjoyed etrailer with ease of shopping and great delivery.

by:

nice heavy ball

by:

Using the hitch ball for one 500 mile trip and using a good grade of grease the chrome was flaking off the top and side of the ball. 3800# trailer with about 500# hitch loading. Would not recommend.

by:

Top-notch product. Just completed a 1400 mile trip pulling a trailer with my Chevy Equinox and my etrailer hitch: issue free! That's the best

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System For R-Pod With 315 Lb Tongue Weight
When choosing a weight distribution system you wan't to find a system that is rated properly for your loaded tongue weight. You want the loaded tongue weight to fall in the center of the range that the weight distribution system spring bars are rated for. The Curt systems that you have mentioned part # C17499, part # C17500 and part # C17501 are all overrated for your tongue weight if it's 315 lbs loaded. Although the Curt systems are really great options there is not a system rated low...

  • Is Weight Distribution Hitch Needed For 2014 Ford Escape Towing 2016 Jayco 10SD Weighing 2000lbs?
Absolutely! Any time the weight of the trailer exceeds 50% of the weight of the tow vehicle a weight distribution hitch is recommended. Since your 2014 Ford Escape 2.0 weighs anywhere between 3500-4000lbs depending on passengers, cargo etc and your trailer weighs in at 2000lbs a weight distribution hitch would be a good idea. Now weight distribution hitches are only compatible with 2" trailer hitch receivers, so if you have a 1-1/4" receiver currently installed on your Escape you will...

  • Compatibility of Reese Sway Control Bracket with Brophy Fixed Ball Mount
The Reese Sway-Control Bracket for 2" Ball Mounts - Class III and IV # RP26003 is absolutely compatible with the Brophy Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 3/4" Rise, 2" Drop - 13-1/4" Long - 10K # BM20. I recommend using hitch ball # C40007 for a 2-5/16 inch ball or # 40038 for a 2 inch ball. This will work with friction sway bars like # 83660 or # 17200 to help control the sway on your trailer. I've attached an article to help further.

  • Picking Out Ball Mount and 2 inch Hitch Ball for Trailer that Needs 5-1/4 inch Drop
When picking out the correct rise/drop ball mount for a towing setup you sometimes can't get exactly the amount you need. The good news is that if you get as close as you can (in your case within 1/2 inch) you will be fine. So using the hitch ball # 40038 that you referenced with the ball mount # C45240 would be a great choice and would work well for you.

  • Best Weight Distribution Hitch w/ Sway Control For 2,000 lb Camper Swaying on Highway
The best option here is to go with a weight distribution hitch (so long as your Dodge Nitro has a hitch rated for weight distribution like # e83KR) because it is going to do a much better job of controlling sway than a friction bar. Since you are okay in general but are getting strong sway on the highway, the best option is a 2-point sway control hitch. The correct fit for a 2,000 lb camper with your tongue weight is the following: - Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control...

  • What U.S.A.-Made 2" Hitch Ball do You Recommend?
I have a great solution for you. However, the 2" Hitch Ball - 1" Diameter x 2-1/4" Long Shank - Chrome - 12,000 lbs # 40038 is manufactured overseas. For a great U.S.A.-made option, the closest 2" ball we have to the 12,000 pound capacity of the Curt model is the Convert-A-Ball Interchangeable Ball Set - 1-7/8" and 2" Balls - 1" Shank - Stainless # 903b. This ball comes with a 10,000 pound capacity and comes with the same 1 inch diameter x 2-1/4 inch long shank.

Convert-A-Ball does not make a longer version of the item # AMSC2 cushioned ball mount but I do have one that will give you enough clearance to open your tail gate. It is the Brophy Ball Mount for 2" Hitches item # BM20. This ball mount measures 13-1/4" long from the center of the hitch pin to the center of the hitch ball. • Selecting a Cushioned Ball Mount Capable of a 3" Drop Which Fits a 2" Hitch Receiver
I have a few options depending on the amount you will be towing and how adjustable you want to hitch to be for other trailers. First is the Curt RockerBall Anti-Rattle Towing Kit # C63KR. This uses a standard style ball mount with a cushioned 2" hitch ball. This will be set at the 3" height and is not adjustable but is the most economical of the choices. The Gen-Y Glyder Shock Absorbing Ball Mount # 325-GH-12005 is a cushioned mount. It does allow you to bolt the bracket from a 0-6" drop...

  • Is a Ball Mount Spacer Available for a Hitch Ball with a 1 Inch Diameter Shank
To use the Curt 2 Inch Trailer Ball, # 40038, with the B&W Ball Mount, # BWBMHD30010, you will want to use the Reese Hitch Ball Bushing, # 58184. This will not reduce the towing or tongue weight capacity of the hitch ball or the ball mount, but you will be limited to the 12,000 lb towing capacity of the hitch ball since it is the lowest rated component.

There is not an exact set minimum tongue weight for the Curt Rebellion XD Shock Absorbing Adjustable Ball Mount w/ 2" part # C45949-22516 however it is not going to be very effective on a light weight trailer. We have asked Curt before about lightweight trailers between 2k and 5k and they do agree there won't be enough tongue weight to compress the cushioned isolator so you would essentially be paying for something you can't use.
