When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Electric reverse lockout with solenoid is automatically activated when the tow vehicle is shifted into reverse. To use this feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round or 7-pole wiring harness.

Trailer coupler was delivered on time. It bolted up to the trailer ok. However, a disc brake lock out solenoid is in a separate box contained in the shipping box. It threads into the surge brake fluid outlet ok, but the solenoid outlet thread and end shape is a mystery that sent me running around town to locate a fitting with the right thread and shape. Very frustrating that the kit did not have a fitting that would convert to something standard. Still searching after two days of searching. Makes this kit relatively worthless til you solve this problem.

The solenoid valve for the Titan brake actuators has one eighth inch pipe NPT threads on the make end and three eighth - 24 inverted seat threads on the female side that a three sixteenth size brake line would install to. We do have a video that is useful about the solenoid and installation.

by:

Not sure of actual product performance yet. But you guys really need to add a small instructional sheet. Wasted half an hour trying to figure out fittings before I finally figured out that since reverse solenoid was not attached it replaced the fitting already on the cylinder. Then after I had it together I saw that the longer shield that was included loose for the reverse lockout solenoid could NOT be put on without removing short shield which could not be removed without taking off the brake lines that I had just installed. Half sheet of paper with 2 or 3 sentences is all you would need to include.

Works fine, But there are many times that a bypass or lockout is needed.

The coupler itself met expectations and is functioning perfectly. However, there are three things I would like to report that would make the installation easier. First, some written instructions would be helpful. There was NO documentation that came with this major item. Next, I was unable to attach the solenoid cutoff for the coupler and determined the solenoid was a different thread size than the coupler's reservoir fitting. I spent extra time and two trips to the hardware store to correct this only to discover that the fitting on the reservoir needed to be removed AND REPLACED with the solenoid connection. The last item relates to the protective cover for the solenoid. A separate part is included that protects the solenoid and its fitting but nothing tells you that this needs to be installed in place of the shorter cover supplied on the coupler. One additional point is the lack of instructions to properly bleed the braking system. It is a little tricky on this item and knowing the correct process would have been helpful instead of relying on internet searches to find help.

This product is a champ when it comes to trailer brakes the reverse actuator automatically disengages the brakes so you won't have to manually . Easy to install looks good

I started to replace the nut that goes to the backup actuator. I recall a review and looked at the video. No nut replacement, just screw in the actuator. The nut is just used for shipping. The product is excellent and my identical Titan lasted over 10 years of salt water use. Glad to see that the quality has not decreased. Will buy again from etrailer.

Quicker than expected delivery. The phonw help was very knowledgable and did a great job of getting the right brake acuator for my needs. The local shop would have sold me the wrong one for more money. I'm very satisfied.

  • Can Titan Actuator-Coupler for 2-5/16-Inch Ball Be Converted to Lunette Ring/Pintle Type
My contact at Titan confirmed that you CAN change out just the inner portion of your Titan actuator ball coupler # T4747220 to convert it to a lunette ring type like # T4748000. The conversion kit you need is part # T4045600183, their Replacement Inner Slide Assembly with 3-Inch Lunette Ring for Titan Model 6 Actuator. I have linked our main page for pintle hitch components.

  • Is an Electric Reverse Lock Out Required for Backing Up a Trailer with Surge Brakes
There are 3 ways to allow a trailer with surge brakes to back up. There can be an electric reverse lockout, a manual lockout, or you can use free-backing brake assemblies if the brakes are drums. The easiest and most-preferred method is the electric reverse lockout like what comes on the Titan Model 6 part # T4747220. Or for just the lockout you would want the part # T4748800. I also attached a link to a page that has all of the free backing brakes we offer.

He informed me that there is no pressure adjustment on the trailer actuator, and that the breaking intensity is completely proportional to the braking intensity of the towing vehicle. He said most likely that the brake system needed to be bled again. There is a way to test the brake system....

  • Recommended Surge Brake Actuator For 7800lb Tandem Axle Boat Trailer W/ Disc Brakes
You would have no problems what so ever going with an 8000lb rated coupler since you are only at 7800lbs, and going with a 12500lb coupler would cause a little more jerky braking due to the different size springs used for the trailer to apply the brakes. With that said I recommend the Dexter Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator # T4747220 is rated for 8000lbs and is designed for disc brakes like what is on your trailer.
