Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Over-the-Hub Rotor

Kodiak's slip-on, stainless steel rotor makes it easy to convert an idler axle to a disc brake axle. Simply place the rotor over your hub. It is most often wheel bolt piloted for a loose fit and then held in place by the wheel itself. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of stainless steel to prevent flexing and rust. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant stainless steel that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

These brakes are excellent! And so is the service/technical support provided by George J of etrailer and others. This was the first time I ever replaced trailer brakes and I also bled the brake system for the first time. Everything went very smooth. I live in Florida and all of use of the trailer is in salt water. The brakes have held up very well.

by:

It was very easy to order online. The description of the product was very good, and I did not have any problems installing the disc Brakes on my boat trailer.

by:

I know they were costly because I went the extra step and also installed stainless hubs and lugnuts but going with Kodiak stainless breakes was they way to go. They look and perform amazingly.

by:

It fit perfectly and was easy to install. Customer service was excellent.

by:

ALL WAS GOOD BUT THE CALIPER BRACKETS WERE THE MACHINED SURFACE FOR THE CALIPER TO SLIDE ON SHOULD BE SMOOTH AND THEY HAC DEEP GOUGES/GRIND MARKS IN THEM. HOPE THIS DOES NOT BECOME A PROBLEM.

by:

They look good and work great, seems like they tolerate saltwater use much better than regular steel/iron parts.

by:

Great Prices and quick shipping. I Have not mounted to the trailer yet but As others have mentioned the bolts for the backing plates do not come with the kit. Since all is stainless I bought stainless nuts and bolts at a local hardware store.
Will try to update after I install them on the trailer.

by:

Just installed, which was very easy; everything fit nicely!
My only complaint concerns the bleed nipples, the neck is too short.
Having a heck of a time getting an air tight seal with the bleeder hose.
Will update after a few dips in the ocean; will see how well they hold up.

I haven't installed the kit yet, but the service has been excellent. I saw it was backordered and called. I was told they expected more in in a few days, so I placed the order over the phone. Later that week I got an email that they were still backordered. A couple days later they shipped and now I have them. Good, honest communication though the ordering process.

by:

Very happy with these. Install was easy. Quality seems very good. Hoping they last a good long time.

by:

I haven't installed them yet but they look excellent, well fabricated and supper ateong. I'm a machinist and i know about machine parts and fabrication and this parts looks awesome. I will post pictures during installation

by:

Great product and replacement for my rusted out old brakes.

by:

I ordered 2 kits of the all stainless. $$$ However, No bolts came with the caliper mounting bracket. Also no bearings came with the hub. I originally was going to purchase the kits from another company but they were out of stock. However theirs came with complete and packed hubs and also the mounting bracket bolts. Another issue I have is the brass Y fitting for the caliper does not fit the new caliper. (The old one was a 2 year old dexter caliper). For what those kits cost, a Y fitting should have come with each caliper. The last thing we want to do is hunt for parts, in a small town, on a Saturday. Needless to say my boat trailer is still partially completed sitting taking up my entire driveway trying to find fittings and 8 more M12x1.25 bolts.

The caliper mounting bracket should have came with bolts. I did send this review over the customer service to get those sent out to you. The caliper does include the common size brake line fittings.

by:

Ordered Kodiac stainless steel disc brakes. Received timely, no hassels, no damge, good price. Although higher price for SS brakes, was tired of having brakes fail every 2-3 years, always on a trip. Comes with 5 year guarantee if I recall correctly. Excellent product. Perfect fit, easy assembly, good instructions. 1 year later no problems. Boat strictly salt water, although only out 4 times this year.

by:

Used 2 sets on a boat trailer and went electric over hydraulic at the same time. Boat is trailering better then ever. Thinking of going with a similar setup on my toy hauler, I'm that happy with the set up. The install was easer then expected, other then needing to run hydraulic lines, it was as easy as a normal brake job on the trailer.

by:

Installed this on another boat trailer of mine 15 years ago still in operation

by:

Bought and installed all Stainless Steel Disk Brake system on my boat trailer. Appear to still be working good. Will know more in another year.

by:

DOES NOT INCLUDE MOUNTING BOLTS. The 7/16 galvanized mounting bolts are NOT included. What a way to cheap out on a 700 dollar set of brakes. The brakes are good and come loaded with SS pads, but making me take a separate trip to the hardware store? That really sends the wrong message when you crack the box open on these.

by:

So far these are great. They work perfectly in a salt water environment on the Gulf of Mexico. I rinse them with the rest of the trailer after each use. They have now been in service for about a year and are not showing any rust at all.

by:

This website is very informative and obviously designed and written by people who know their products. All my questions were answered by the click of a button thus allowing me to order parts that fit with no need for returns. The K2R35 kit was all stainless and made well, installed easily and worked perfect with all parts included. The best choice for saltwater use. Extremely pleased with purchase.

by:

Best trailer brakes I've owned.

by:

Would get 5 stars if the bolts for the brackets were included.

by:

Good quality parts, super simple to find the items and shipping was fast.
Very simple install once the old rust parts were removed and the stub axels cleaned up. Ready to make a hasty retreat now with hurricane season approaching.

by:

i would like to say that my experience with etrailer has been a great one. everything
I ordered from them arrived as ordered and in a timely manner.

by:

I installed the gear myself and everything is working well.

  • Recommend Kodiak Disc Brake Kit To Fit Trailer With 13 Inch Wheels
The reason why the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 10 Inch Rotor, part # K2R35S, will not fit 13 inch wheels is because part # K2R35S uses a slip on rotor, so the assembly is slightly bigger making the caliper sit out further. You would need a hub and rotor assembly disc brake kit. The caliper and rotors you would need for your trailer with 13 inch wheels is the Kodiak Disc Brake Assembly, part # K2HR35DS. You would need to order a quantity of 2 of part # K2HR35DS, as it is sold for one side....
