Kodiak Rotor Diagram

Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Integral Hub-and-Rotor Assemblies

The integral hub-and-rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Kodiak's rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage. Furthermore, machined disc brakes minimize the chance of contamination between the hub and rotor, resulting in excellent performance and long life.

Calipers

Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with 4-bolt brake flange configurations, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

@Steve Unfortunately, Kodiak doesn't include those with the # K2HR35D disc brake kit.

Shipping was fast but please call and place the order on the phone and don't order all your stuff online like I did. The online system is not sophisticated enough to check inventory. The surge actuator I ordered was on back order even though all my other items were in stock. two weeks went by and I decided to call and found this out. Calling on the phone ensures priority of your order. Plus the people are super nice. I talked to Cathy T and I would recommend her to help you.

As for the Kodiak Brakes the installation was super easy. The brakes were easy to bleed. I tried to get them to self bleed but had to use the power bleeder I purchased because I was eager to get it done. These brakes are so good you can't even try to back through them even a little bit. I had a bad main ground on my harness and didn't realize until I tried to back up in the driveway. It would not budge and inch. BTW- I have never converted drum brakes to disc in my life. It was literally 4 new grade 5 bolts, two seals, and two new bearing and one big nut that holds the hub to the axle. The only special tool I needed was a torque wrench.

by:

The whole staff at etrailer bent over backwards to make sure I was satisfied with the installation of brakes on my trailer. Have made several purchases from them always satisfied with parts and service. Special credit to Jamie great to deal with. Answered all my questions and was very knowledgeable.

by:

My AmeraTrail trailer came with this kit when built. Unfortunately the original owner did not pay any attention to the trailer brakes. One caliper was rotted out and leaking fluid atround piston. Other caliper piston seized. I bought this replacement kit from Etrailer and it arrived just as described and pretty quick. Replaced all old parts and new went on nice and easy. When bleeding calipers be advised the bleeders are a 2 piece design. Looking forward to having good trailer brakes again.

by:

Disc brake upgrade has been well worth the effort and cost even after a full year. Travel trailer now stops without divine intervention! Took a while to install it (brake lines mostly), but hey, if you don't have a lift, then your on your back for a lot of hours.

by:

Delivery was fast, accurate in the customer service helping select the correct items and quality of product looks great. Haven't driven the trailer on a long trip yet to test but a quick run on the highway performed well.

So far so good after a year. The Gulf of Mexico is highly corrosive to the metals and such but a good hose off with Salt Away does a very good job removing the salt.

by:

On some boat trailers particular mine, you have to drop the leaf spring in order to get the bolt in for the caliper but all in all they fit like they’re supposed to

by:

Replaced UHP-42 with these. Installation was easy, although the instruction manual was pretty worthless. It was generic and included multiple steps not applicable to this installation. Better to watch the etrailer videos. Note that this hub assembly pushes your tires out an extra 1/4”+ from the UHP model.

by:

Good product, well-packaged. Got everything needed to replace my worn-out calipers, bearings and rotors, all went smoothly. It turned out great!

All my old brake hardware was a rusted mess and this was a perfect replacement

by:

I could not be happier,

What a
diiference to have not just good brakes, but great brakes. Plus, the install was so easy, all the hardware was a perfect fit, instructions were right on the money (btw, I'm a retired engineer from a nuclear plant and I wrote procedures, so I'm picky) Anyway, towed the boat 1,000 miles and what a reassuring feeling to know that the equipment is in good working order and does the job when called upon.

I'm attaching a couple of pictures so you can see what I did.

Thanks again, I will be using etrailer in the future anytime I need something, feel free to pass on my comments

by:

Website was very helpful in selecting what I needed. Order process was simple and delivery was actually early! Very satisfied, will make etrailer my normal for trailer needs.

by:

Product has performed flawlessly. It was an easy install with all the proper fittings and equipment and the printed instructions were easy to follow. We made a trip with it last fall through the mountains and never felt there was any issue with the trailer brakes on steeper down grades. Much better than the electric magnetic drum brakes I replaced.
I would and have recommended this product to many travel trailer owners.

Richard M.

The summer of 2018, we traveled to Alaska and put 15,000 miles on the trailer. The brakes performed as expected and we never felt that the trailer was pushing us when the brakes were applied. We crossed passes from 2500 feet to 12,000 feet with some 7-9 downgrades and felt completely confident in the stopping power. I continue to recommend that trailer owners should seriously consider replacing the electric brake systems on their RV trailers with electric over hydraulic disc brakes. Your safety will be enhanced and you will never regret the upgrade.

by:

I bought a 1989 boat & trailer. Although the trailer was in good condition, the trailer braking system was completely "trashed". The Kodiak Disc Brake Kit made the conversion from drum brake to disc brake very easy. The mounting bracket and caliper bolted right up to the standard axle flange. I backed up the kit with a 1600psi electric over hydraulic actuator using stainless steel tubing along the frame, and braided stainless steel hoses for the final connections to the calipers. The overall breaking is consistent and predictable, and infinitely adjustable with the electric over hydraulic actuator and control box (mounted in the truck cab).

My drum brakes locked up on me because it is a boat trailer and gets submerged in water. I hate drum brakes, due how many part are inside and can rust up. I am the 3rd owner of my 1998 boat trailer and it was hard to figure out what I needed to fix it. I contacted etrailer and they were super helpful, super informative and super easy to work with. I told them what I had, and what I wanted to do., and they put a package together for me and that was them. Everything was super east to install because it is all bolt on. I did have to do some cutting and grinding on my old tongue because the master was welded on. That was the only difficult part. My new setup is amazing and the disk brakes and new master make it feel like my boat is not even there. All in all, I am 110% satisfied and will definitely be a returning customer for any trailer needs. Thank you etrailer for making everything super easy.

by:

I have six horse drawn wagons with the old style drum brakes that work off of a hydraulic foot pedal. Because the wagons sit for the winter months the wheel cylinders freeze up and this is a huge pain in the butt to fix and they lock up when I am doing a wagon ride and need the wagon right know. I did the research on the disc brakes and the wheel cylinder is stainless steel and designed to be backed into salt water and not only that but self adjusting. Know more crawling under six wagons to adjust brakes every year. Greg S could not have been more knowledgeable about the product. I received the kits next day and they could not have been easier to install. I cannot say enough good about these. I have six more wagons to do and I will be changing all of them out over time. I will not go back to drum brakes.

by:

I changed the brakes on my 1995 boat trailer from drum to disc. I was able to figure out what to order on the etrailer web site. The whole project was relatively easy. I just had to remove the old parts and bolt on the new ones. The new trailer hitch actuator is much easier to used than my old one.

by:

I could not be more please with this set up. Easy to install great customer service. I have had tons of problems with old drum brakes constantly adjusting wheel cylinders rusting up then not working. All of those problems are gone. I have bought 4 sets of these and am going to buy two more sets. I cannot say enough good.

by:

Product was shipped and arrived promptly. This is a replacement for an older UFP brake set that only had a single bolt holding the caliper to the bracket. Well a bolt broke and allowed the caliper to rattle around in the wheel for several hundred miles. When looking for replacements I knew I wanted a two bolt system. Based upon previous reviews for the Kodiak kit and previous experience with Etrailer, I decided to switch to the Kodiak brand. Time will tell how long they last but they seem well designed and well built and I expect them to hold up.

by:

One year ago I purchased a set of Kodiak disc brake set up for a boat trailer it installed very easily and is still doing very well after a years use thank you a trailer

by:

I received the product a few days ago and everything looks solid. Make sure you purchase all hardware separately because it comes with nothing. No bearings, seals, mounting bolts and nuts, caps for bleeder valve, or lug nuts. It would have been nice to have known this beforehand.

by:

Very nice product and has held up well in salt water. Brakes work well and they to have held up very well in salt water. Installation was easy just followed the instructions . Would highly recommend if you need corrosion resistant brakes and rotor/hub.

by:

Everything was great. Wish it came with lug nuts (simple thing that would have saved me time). I received everything I ordered and no issues. I will order again from etrailer.com because you know boat trailer breaks don't last long.

by:

Product arrived in great condition no damage to packaging or contents.
Easy installation about an hour for the pair.
Parts are of high quality and fit is perfect.
Highly recommend to anyone needing brake replacement parts, I'll be using them on my other units as needed.

  • How to Convert Trailer Drum Brakes Over to Disc Brakes
There is a good way to get the check valve out of your current actuator and save some money.
