Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 5-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

2014 Toyota Tundra

Arrived as promised it was easy to install I have tried it out a couple times on my 7X16 cargo trailer. Today I think I have set it up properly for my truck and trailer at B1 at #12 boost level. It never locked up trailer brakes but I believe it is right. Installed on 2014 4x4 Tundra with 4.6 V8 etrailer sent hook up wire to fit Toyota receptacle which was behind driver side kick panel. Grounded to gas pedal bolt, mounted unit under dash on right side of steering wheel.

I use this brake controller for my 2007 Tundra hauling a 6x10 dump trailer. I’m very pleased with the product, it works great. The only thing I notice is that you have to be very aware of your load, dialing in the right number for your weight. I could be at 4.8 and my trailer tires will lock up. Go down to 4.6 and they’ll be good. That’s the only thing I notice.

It would be easy to have this part order and install on the Tundra. i went one step further and end up using the wiring in the box with P3 Trailer brake and had to splice the wiring to make longer extension in order to install the P3 in the empty slot between the lighter and 12v socket which make is more customized look and out of way. Would be cool if they offer longer version for someone who want to install it somewhere else behind the driver's spot zone.

Product been working great. I even kept the console part and move it newer Tundra truck that I brought and bigger camper. Work better than I expected. I did use the bracket that come with the controller and mounted it. So I wouldnt have to worry about it coming loose or being in so far in the console. It also allow me to use the manual brake easily.

Purchased brake controller for my 2014 Tuna. excellent order/shipping/receiving time.Received everything I needed with order in a very timely fashion. Website made it very easy to find and decide on exactly what I wanted. Etrailer will be my first choice for finding the accessories I need in the future. Purchased Tekonsha P3 brake controller and is the best thing to a factory installed controller I have encountered.

WOW! Somebody that actually cares! This email was a real surprise. Yes I amstill using the controller and it works better than any I have ever owned. Idefinitely recommend I as well as etrailer.com to everyone interested. Thanks for caring about your customers!

Pictures of the install. Approximately
a 20 min job. First picture my finger is pointing to the factory plug with the etrailer supplied harness plugged in. Note the harness did not specify that the white common with the ring terminal should be connected to ground. But then again that SHOULD be obvious. I will be towing this weekend so I will rate the product then. One minor gripe is that there is always power to the unit which is a battery drain (as evidenced with the key out of the ignition and the unit stayed on) Not sure as to the impact but the controller can always be unplugged or removed.
Sorry for the dirty floor mats in the photos.

Just a quick note, the controller has an automatic shut-off. After 15 minutes of the truck powering off and sitting still, the control powers down. As soon as it sees movement, it powers back on.

So you ran ground to negative side of battery? Or just on the frame interior somewhere?

Etrailer Expert

Rachael H.

7/1/2014

For this harness you can either run the ground to the negative side of the battery, or use a know ground location within the vehicle. Running the ground to the negative side of the battery will yield a better connection, however you may have to extend the wire to reach the battery. Either way you choose to ground the controller it is always recommend to test the brake controller at slow speeds and make sure that it is functioning properly before starting a long trip.

I sell and install a variety of components for various companies and individuals. I have zero comebacks from this company. Not that I haven't received defective parts but they always make it right. And that is good business.

by:
Toyota Tacoma

Install is very easy once you locate the vehicle's brake controller plug. The plug in a Tacoma is extremely well hidden. It is high above the driver's side kick panel taped behind a plug wrapped in foam. I have attached a photo to help you locate it in a late model Tacoma. Once I found the plug, the install took less than 20 min. The controller works great.

After a year of use in our Lexus GX460, it's been working flawlessly. Easy to install and use. Literally, plug and play.

by:
2008 Toyota Tacoma

We ordered a part for the 2008 Land Cruiser and was told that it's the same installation. IT IS NOT! The connection to the harness is not in the same location as Tacoma. After looking for more than an hour, I got smart and found some info on another website. Even the manufacture has the info wrong. So, if you have a 200 series Land Cruiser, your plug is located under the dash behind the switches for the mirror. You will need to take apart the lower dash panel and then push out the switch panel. There is no need to detach any switch, it all hangs out just fine. See photos for the location of the plug. Plug the adapter in from there you can follow the instructions.

2013 Dodge Ram Pickup

Installed P3 this weekend in 2013 Tundra Crewmax with towing package and pre-wire. Extremely easy, even with the center console installation. Will let the photos tell the story. Did have to combine the P3 included harness with the additional OEM harness to gain the length I needed. Plug and play with the pre-wire. Hooked up to trailer and set boost levels for varying loads. Works great! Vast improvement over older model Tekonsha controller in my Ram 2500 Diesel. Pull a Kiefer BP horse trailer: about 3600 lbs empty, 7500 with 3 quarter horses and gear. Usually pull 6-8 times per year, with only 1-2 horses. Short distance and flat terrain. It took about an hour to install. Dad is a retired USAF/FAA radar technician with every tool known to man. He QC'd the job. Will try to write better review later.

Easy to install. Owners manual had location of factory plug and we installed the entire system in less than an hour. We used the removable bracket so the unit can be stored in the case that was included with the controller when not towing so it is completely out of the way of the drivers legs and knees. We are a collision repair shop and I would rate the ease of installation as relatively easy if you just use common sense and consider wiring location and controller location BEFORE drilling holes in the plastic lower dash cover. Also need to be mindful on the lower air bag that protects the drivers legs in a serious collision and the routing of the wires if you install it on the right side of the steering wheel. We used wire ties and a small plastic wire holder to place the wiring in a secure place that does not rub through the wire insulation or get snagged by the drivers feet. See the attached photos. All work was performed in slightly less than one hour.

I picked up the redarc brake controller and sumo bags. I installed both today. I have to say I'm excited to use both when I pick up my travel trailer. The Redarc is so clean! It might have taken me an hour to install but that was just bc I was deciding how I wanted to run it .

Sumo bags took an hour to out on! I cant tell you how great they work yet. But the install was a breeze.

This makes trailer brake installation easy. It fits perfectly

by:

Arrived sooner than I expected. Watched one helpful installation video (not exactly the same vehicle nor same brake controller but still useful). Took me about an hour and half (with heat breaks) to figure it all out and install. Works great. My only regret is that I waited so long to get to it. Saved over $250 compared to RV repair shop installation.

Toyota 4Runner

Excellent performance and value. The plastic mounting bracket tends to jam & I have low confidence it will survive many removals, but otherwise it is a nice little controller. Keeps a 2200lb trailer (empty) safely behind a 4000lb 4Runner. Installation using Tenkosha's Toyota wiring adapter took minutes.

My package from you guys arrived Friday night, and I installed my brake controller on Saturday using both the 3040-P harness and the harness that comes with the unit. I connected the 3040-P pigtail to the factory connector and run it as far toward the passenger side as it would reach then cut the end off that plugs into the P3 as I needed more length. At this point I went to the storage area that I mounted the P3 in and drilled a hole just big enough for the 4 wires that come out of the P3 harness. At this end I used the P3 harness that came with the controller...fished it thru the little hole and connected about where the little pocket is on the right hand side of the steering wheel. I have yet to pull my trailer with it connected....hopefully this weekend, but at least it looks good!

The adapter and brake controller installed easy and had worked well.

The Tehonsha Plug-In wiring adapter #3040-P fit just like it is supposed to in the 2015 Lexus KX 570. Also etrailer staff was very active in keeping me updated on my order progress and arrival. Also when I had trouble finding the KX side of the adapter the etrailer helped by providing articles and pictures. I am very pleased with my encounter with etrailer.

Works well, plug & play but needs to be a couple of inches longer to route correctly if mounted on the left side of the kneeboard.

  • Recommended Brake Controller and 4-Way/7-Way Connector for 2018 Toyota 4Runner w/Tow Package
The brake controller that I recommend for your 2018 Toyota 4Runner with the Tow Package is the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR because of how easy it is to use, the versatility in mounting locations, and the wide variety of towing applications it can accommodate. To connect this to your 4Runner you just need the adapters # 3040-P and # 331-TPH-017.
