Brake Controller Install on 2000 Ford F-150 With 4-Flat trailer Connector Using Adapter # HM47200

Question:

I just bought a Hopkins 4 flat to 7 Round trailer wiring harness. I have a 2000 F150 with the OEM 4 flat wiring. What do the three wires from the wiring harness connect to and what fuses do I have to add for a trailer brake controller?

The additional wire leads on the Hopkins # HM47200 Quick-Install Trailer Connector Adapter are provided to deliver additional signals to the 7-way vehicle socket. These signals include the brake controller output signal (blue wire), the trailer 12V power feed (red wire) and the vehicle's reverse light signal (purple wire). The white wire is ground.

The blue lead connects to the blue wire at the back of your brake controller; the red wire connects to your vehicle battery positive terminal (through a 40-amp circuit breaker like # 9510) and the purple wire connects to the taillight wire on the truck that carries the reverse light signal (if your trailer has this function).

What I suggest you do is use our all-inclusive trailer brake controller installation kit, # ETBC7, since this kit includes everything you need, including a 7-way socket. You can keep your Hopkins as a spare since trailer connectors can corrode and degrade over time. This kit will save you the trouble of gathering up all the individual wires, ring terminals, connectors, zip ties, etc.

I have linked several articles and videos for you on brake controller installation.

Check your power distribution box in the engine compartment for any fuse locations that are labeled 'trailer' or 'tow' and install as required.
