How to Pick Out Weight Distribution System for Horse Trailer that Will have Varying Tongue Weights
Question:
Im confused about picking the right WD system. My trailer weight can vary 2 horse trailer. I know the unloaded trailer tongue weight close to 500lbs and have a rough idea on the increase of tongue weight with one or two horses. It looks like the WD systems have various weights listed like RP66151 has tongue weights of 300, 400 and 500 lbs. So Im assuming that means it is adjustable, maybe by where the bracket is mounted? And if so, should I pick some point in the middle of the various weights I may have, or is there an expectation that I adjust it based on the load? And what happens if it is rated too high, ride gets stiff or something?

You are on the right track. You want to pick a weight distribution system that the tongue weight range of your trailer will fall right into the middle of.
The amount of chain links on a system like the # RP66541 is how the spring tension is adjusted. This system has a range of 400 to 800 lbs of tongue weight and would have a pretty good chance of covering all of your tongue weight range. You will need to confirm this first though. I attached an FAQ article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.
If the system is rated too high the ride will be stiff, too low and it won't be effective.
Basically you would want to set the WD system for each time you tow with a different amount of tongue weight. If you remember the amount of chain links used you will save time next time you tow with that amount of tongue weight.
