5th Wheel Trailer Telescoping Pin Box Scrapes Tailgate on 2013 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4x4 Crew Cab

Question:

I have a sliding pin box and in the rear position for max turning it just scrapes the top of the tail gate protector. Should i raise my pin box? I know this will put more weight on the rv wheels and less on the truck but what can I do to prevent this situation. There may come a time when I need the pin box in the rear position.

The pin box itself, on the trailer, slides? Then that sounds like a telescoping pin box. If lowering the tailgate is not an option, a 5th wheel tailgate might help. Take a look at the 100 series tailgate, # VGM-07-100. The V-shape area at the top provides more clearance for the pin box.

We also have a composite locking version, # VGM-07-4000.

Raising the pin box on the trailer will actually bring the trailer lower. You might be able to lower the pin box. Or you could raise the height of the 5th wheel trailer hitch. If you do this then the trailer will ride higher in the front.

If it rides too high then you could raise the rear of the trailer. If the leaf spring stack is mounted under the axle, you can use an over/under conversion kit to move the stack to the top of the axle. You would use # K71-384-00 for a 2-3/8 inch diameter round axle or # K71-385-00 for a 3 inch diameter round axle.

Raising the height of a trailer will change the center of gravity and make the trailer more susceptible to sway.
