Troubleshooting Trailer Tires that Blow Out

Question:

I carry heavy loads of wood on my single axle trailer. The size 18.5 x 8.5 are the size put what about the side wall plys. I looked at my tires and there are only 2 ply side walls. I have several tires on my trailer that have blown out because of weak side walls. Should I go to a 8 ply and if so do they make them in a 8 ply?

There are a few reasons trailer tires fail. The most common is that they are overloaded. You need to check the capacity of your tires (and trailer) and be sure you are not exceeding their capacities. The highest rated tire we have the in the size you need is the part # AM1HP28 as it has a 1,165 capacity when inflated to 70 psi. Ply rating is another way of stating the capacity for a tire. As long as the tire has the capacity needed you won't need to worry about the ply rating.

Another reason a trailer tire will fail is if it is exceeding the speed rating for the tire. Most trailer tires are rated at only going 65 miles per hour. Any more than that and heat builds up and the tire fails.

Lastly, trailer tires are designed to always be inflated to their max psi. If a trailer tire is inflated to a lower air pressure than the maximum, the amount of weight that the tire can carry will be reduced. If a heavier load is put on the trailer tire than what is recommended for that air pressure, the sidewall of the tire could heat up and cause the tire to fail.
