What Is The Difference Between Fixed Rack And Fold-Up Rack On Hitch Mounted Bike Carrier

Question:

I was seriously looking at the Swagman XTC-2. The description indicated a fixed rack as opposed to a fold-up rack. I am not clear what that means. Thank you.

When looking at platform-style bike carriers like the Swagman XTC-2, part # S64670, fixed rack means the rack will not tilt away from the rear of the vehicle allowing access to the rear cargo area. A fixed rack will not fold up or tilt.

The fold-up feature means that the rack will fold up while installed in the hitch to provide more room at the rear of the vehicle when unloaded. Some bike racks have a fold-up feature, and a tilt-away feature, while other bike racks have the fold-up feature but are unable to tilt-away.

When selecting a hitch-mounted bike carrier you want to make sure you clear the rear of your 2010 Honda Fit. I have attached a helpful article that tells how to measure to make sure you have enough clearance. You will need a tape measure and a straight edge like a yardstick or a dowel. Hold the straight edge against the back of the vehicle bumper so that it extends below the hitch. Then measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the straight edge and that is the clearance you need.

If accessing the rear cargo area of your vehicle while bikes are loaded is not important, the # S64670, may work well for you. When empty, the upright arm can be folded down for access to the cargo area and also for easy storage. This bike rack measures 8 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the wheel hoop.
