Troubleshooting a Trailer That Only the Right Turn Signal Works
Question:
I recently bought a 2011 Dodge Ram used and tried connecting a trailer up to it for the first time. I noticed that only the right signal on the trailer works. When I turn on the right signal it comes on, when I turn on the left - the right comes on, when I turn on the hazards - the right comes on. No brake lights and no running lights. Any suggestions? Thanks,

The problem is either on the trailer or your 2011 Dodge Ram. Most likely the trailer though. First thing you want to do is test the trailer connector on your Ram for voltage on the right pins when the various taillight circuits are applied. You will need a buddy for this and a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. I attached an FAQ that has all of the wiring diagrams for the different trailer connectors available. If the problem is on the vehicle it is most likely corrosion related. Inspect and clean the inside and backside of the connector. Also check for exposed wire that could be causing a short and fix as necessary.
If the problem is on the trailer the solution will be similar to what I described. First inspect the trailer connector looking for any corrosion or exposed wire and fix as necessary. Next move down to the taillight assemblies (starting with the left one) and make sure they are grounded to a clean metal surface. Most assemblies ground through the mounting hardware so make sure they are attached to a clean, rust-free surface.
I attached a couple helpful FAQ articles for you to check out as well.
