Installing a Brake Controller on a 2004 Nissan Titan with Factory Tow Package
Question:
All, Im having a car hauler built by Aluminum Trailer Group in Ocala, FL and they recommended you folks. Im looking at Controller # 90195-3050-P. My 2004 Titan wi/ tow package has the 7 pin plug out back. Ive been towing boats in the past so no electric brakes needed until now. Question #1: The vehicle came with an electric brake jumper still in the bag in glovebox! that will plug in under the dash, and has five 5 wires. The five color coded functions are listed as R/g. Brake Sig vehicle stop lamp switch to Contoller B. Gnd. Brake controller ground Br/w Brk out. Brake controller switched output R/l. ILL trailer brake controller illumination R. Fused B+ fused trailer brake controller battery feed B+ The wire ends opposite the harness plug are stripped and ready to be hard wired. Should I plan to use this jumper with the Controller above,or will your included harness work, or is there another harness that you sell that would be a bit more plug n play? Question #2: This trailers only going to weigh about 1350# empty and with brakes on both axles Im concerned about over-braking when its unloaded. Likely 4500-5000# loaded. Is there a way to modulate the brakes below the 13 initial so Im not locking up tires, but still have the signal lights operational? Im guessing just unplugging the controller might do the job? Thanks in advance for the help.

The folks at the Aluminum Trailer Group sent you to the right place. There are a few different routes you can take to install a brake controller on your 2004 Nissan Titan. Since it came with the factory tow package, you could simply purchase the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller, # 90195, and splice the included universal harness to your OEM harness that was included with the truck. The wires on the brake controller harness are listed below.
Black - 12v Battery Feed
Blue - Brake Output Power
Red - Stop Light Switch to Controller
White - Ground
The brake controller will come with all of the hardware and butt connectors required to complete the installation. Once the harnesses are spliced together, it will essentially be a plug n play harness.
If you would prefer to use a harness that does not require splicing together, you will want the Tekonsha Brake Control Wiring Adapter, # 3050-P. Please note, we have found that the factory brake controller plug on some models (primarily XE models) do not have the 4 pins to match up with the adapter plug. The factory plug will need to be hardwired onto the brake controller harness included with the brake controller.
To answer your second question, you will not have to disconnect the brake controller when your trailer is empty. Unplugging the brake controller will reset all of the settings, so it is not ideal. Even with the light weight of the unloaded trailer, you can just reduce the power output on the brake controller to a level that will not lockup the brakes. The P3 can be reduced to less than half of a volt which would not lock up your brakes.
I recommend finding a good power setting for the trailer when it is loaded and a good power setting for the trailer when it is empty and simply alternate between those two settings.
