Trailer Brakes Immediately Lock When Trailer Plugged In

Question:

I have a 2007 Chevy Tahoe with a factory installed trailer towing package. I installed a prodoigy brake controller and have all the correct lights that show its working properly. The truck came with a 7 pole trailer connector, but my horse trailer only has a 5 pole wiring end, so I bought an adapter to connect the two. Lights, turn signals seem to work fine, but trailer brakes lock up as soon as I connect the trailer end to the truck end. Disconnect the trailer wiring and the wheels move fine.

I think I know what is happening here. Does the adapter you are using have 5 pins in a circle, plus one in the middle? This is a 6-way connector, there are two generally accepted ways of wiring this connector. One method uses the center pin as the brake output circuit, the other uses the center pin as the 12-volt accessory power lead. If your adapter is wired one way, and the trailer is wired the other, your brakes will lock immediately upon plugging the trailer in.
We offer a universal 7 to 6-Way Adapter, part # 47549. This adapter can be wired either way to match your trailer.
