I did some research and found that your 2007 Mazda CX-9 is rated for 3,500 lbs towing capacity. We recommend weight distribution when the trailer weight is more than 50 percent of the weight of the vehicle doing the towing. Installing a weight distribution system with sway control will help keep the trailer level and prevent sway when in windy conditions or on winding roads or when big rigs pass you on the highway.
To determine if you need a weight distribution system we will need to know the weight of the trailer when it is fully loaded and ready to tow, and the tongue weight. The tongue weight will be the tongue weight of the trailer added to the weight of any cargo you are carrying behind the rear axle of your CX-9.
Also, do you have a brake system installed currently on your trailer? If so, can you let me know what kind of system it is.
This information will help us make a recommendation for you that may solve your towing woes. I am attaching a link to a helpful article that explains weight distribution and sway you can check out.
