What are the Towing Capacities for the Curt Hitches part # 15901 and # 15902

Question:

I am interested in purchasing Curt hitch 15902 to install on a Rexhall 26 foot vision motor home. This motor home is on the F3S standard Ford chasis and is the same chasis as the much larger 32 foot vision camper. The motor home is rated to tow 10500 lbs. The Curt hitch manufacturer states that 15901 and 15902 are rated to a GTW of 12,000 lbs. I have found an installer to do this in my area. They are telling me that the current class III hitch that is installed is rated at 5000 lbs and I verified it. Installer is stating this is equivalent to currently installed hitch because: Larger class hitches require in upwards of 30 inches of frame mounting area. This motor home has only approximately 18-20 inches of frame available for hitch mounting. So who do I trust, the installer or the Manufacturer? Why would the manufacturer sell a hitch that has this high of a rating and only requires a smaller footprint on the frame? I am trying to move from 5000 to 7000 I dont need the full 12000. Most of this is so I feel better driving down the road.

I can tell you what Curt lists as the capacities for their # 15901 and # 15902 hitches. You are correct, they both have 12k capacities. The only other capacity you will need to look up is the capacity for your RV. If it is at least 12k then you could take full advantage of the hitch's capacity assuming they were installed correctly. This info should be in the RV owner's manual.
