Can Chucking, Forward and Back Movement of 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, be Reduced or Stopped

Question:

I have seen this Come up more than once. This is a little different this is a brand new trailer and hitch. But my Reese 16 k hitch has the pivot head and I feel there is too much play. What is normal play for this type of hitch? To me there seems to be too much forward and backward motion on stops and starts.

On any 5th wheel trailer hitch you are going to get some chucking, forward and back movement, during starts and stops. Its the nature of the beast. On some hitches the movement is more pronounced because of how the hitch is designed. On hitches that pivot on a large center bolt you are going to see, feel, or hear more movement.

The Reese 16K hitches mostly use a dual jaw system. The regular dual jaw is secure but can allow for some movement as well. This is normal. Adding an air ride pin box to the trailer can reduce chucking by quite a bit. Switching to a single jaw system like the # RP30928 will provide you with the best king-pin-to-jaw contact for less chucking and bouncing.

An air ride pin box can be costly and they only fit certain pin boxes. I would need to know the manufacturer and model of the pin box (should be on a sticker or plate on the pin box) to determine if there are any available.

Considering the amount of weight and force involved in 5th wheel towing there is no way to completely eliminate the movement.

If the hitch head is moving significantly like something is broken then you will want to cease using it immediately. This does not seem likely on a new hitch though. Make sure that the hitch is properly lubricated according to the instructions and that you follow the before each trip sections of the hitch instructions.
