Hitch-Mount Cargo Carrier for Toyota Tundra for Use Transporting 150-lb Outboard Motor

Question:

I was thinking of purchasing a cargo carrier for my Toyota Tundra. I have an inflatable boat which slides on top of a box tent on the bed of my truck, but dont have room for the outboard engine. The engine is a 15 Hp Honda, and weighs approximately 150 lbs. I was thinking of putting it on a stand, and just wheeling it on to the cargo carrier using the ramp. I noticed the wheelchair carriers fold up when not needed - a slight advantage when I dont need to carry the engine. Would this work? Would the aluminum carriers be a better choice? Thanks!

Since I do not know what class of hitch you have on your Tundra I suggest you start by checking its safety sticker to confirm its tongue weight rating, which is the downward force applied to the hitch. As an example, a 2013 Toyota Tundra can be equipped with any of three classes of 2-inch trailer hitch: Class III, Class IV and Class V. Please see the link provided.

The good news is that any of these should have enough capacity for the weight of your 150-lb motor and stand plus the weight of your choice of hitch-mount carrier. Keep in mind that the combined weight of all three of these items must remain within the rated capacity for your hitch and your truck. A check of your vehicle owner's manual to confirm its tongue weight rating is a good idea.

I have included a link to our main page for ramped folding-type cargo carriers that will fit a 2-inch hitch of Class III or higher hitch. Aluminum carriers are a good option if your total combined weight load (motor, stand and carrier) approaches the limit of your trailer hitch. Please note that these folding ramped carriers have a maximum cargo weight limit of 500-lbs, which represents the weight of the motor and stand.

One of the carriers you referenced, Flint Hill Goods #FHG77ZR, offers a 48" long x 28" wide ramp, has 4-3/4"-inches of clearance from the hitch pin hole when folded up and includes an anti-rattle device to prevent movement. It weights 80 pounds. The aluminum version of this is the flint Hill Goods # FHG69ZR. It offers a 60" ramp, and weighs 77 pounds. It does not fold and comes with an anti-tilt bracket and a regular pin and clip.

I have linked a video on each of these items for your review along with an article concerning hitch carriers that may be a helpful starting point.
