The answer to your question depends on what the hitch instructions call for. However, if it is a Curt like the # C11412 we previously talked about they have dropped the requirement for the strap. If you have a strap already it wouldn't hurt to use it to stabilize the # B01748 but it is not required.

Thanks for the super fast response. The reason I asked is because I purchased a Swagman XCT2 to attach to the C11412. The Curt stabilizer strap will not attach to my Golf; the gap between the roof and the hatch door is too narrow for the "hook." Without the strap, the rack wobbles quite a bit. The strap will attach to the side of the hatch door near the top, but the guy at our bike shop said he thought that fitting would damage my car and recommended against it. I was chatting with Ashton; he sent me a list of racks that he said don't require a strap. One of those was the Aero. I don't want to spend a ton since I already threw away the Swagman box, so I'll have to eat that cost. But if I don't need to use a strap (even though the rack wobbles quite a bit), then even better.
