Availability of 3,500 lbs Axle with 89" Hub Face and 69-1/4" Spring Seat Dimensions
Question:
Im shopping for a new 3500 lb axle for my 1975 vintage single-axle boat trailer its otherwise restored. My hub face distance is 89, but my spring separation is 69 1/4. This seems to exceed the allowed overhang everywhere I look. Is there any way to accommodate these measurements? Based on my frame width, I could go with as little as 85 on the hub face, but that doesnt seem to help.

Hey Mike, thanks for reaching out!
I don't think it's as much the allowable overhang as much as your trailer just being older and having a unique axle size. You can special order an axle from a trailer shop with the specs you need or you can use one of our Timbren Axle-Less Kits like part # A35RS545E which installs directly to the trailer frame and doesn't need a specific spring-center measurement.
The other alternative is to use an axle like the Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes # e43SR and have an experienced welder cut off the old spring seats and weld on new ones in the right locations.

OK, so I can get an axle with the smaller spring spacing for my trailer. From what I read, reducing the overhang below the specified minimum reduces the load capacity of the axle. So the question is, by how much. I'm going in 3/4' on each side, a total 1 1/2" shortfall in overhang. Does that make a significant difference? Considering the weight of my boat and gear, I've got 300-400 pounds to spare on axle capacity. Am I OK? If you are not sure, perhaps you can refer me to someone at a manufacturer who can help with the calculation.
