Recommended 7-Way Wiring And Wireless Brake Controller For A 2022 Toyota Highlander

Question:

Hi, I have a Toyota Highlander 2022 with a 4 pin adapter. Can I buy a 4 to 7 pin adapter and a wireless brake controller to make the brake controller work if yes, can you please tell part numbers? Or will I need additional wiring? Thanks. Vijay

Hi Vijay,

Since you're wanting to go with a wireless brake controller you can use the Curt Trailer Connector Adapter # C57672 you were looking at and just cap off both the yellow and blue wires with some electrical tape. These can be saved for use later on if you want a hardwired brake controller or have a boat trailer with a reverse lock out solenoid. You'll need to pick up some 10awg wire # 10-1-1 to run from the black wire up to the battery and a 40 amp circuit breaker # 9510 inline to protect your wiring. The white wire with the ring terminal just needs to be mounted to the frame with the included self-tapping screw and the 4-pole connector will plug into the 4-pole wire harness you already have.

From there you'll just need the Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller # C51180. This plugs into the 7-way and has an app to adjust the settings or manually activate the brakes. You'll want to follow the instructions to the letter to avoid pairing issues during the installation. If you don't getting it to pair can be quite a hassle.

Thanks Kevin. From your comment, it seems that I can use the wireless brake controller with the 4 to 7 pin adapter (with the 2 extra wires taped) and they should be sufficient for brake controller work wirelessly without any extra wiring? Secondary question: as the brake controller works wirelessly with a Bluetooth, what if I don’t use the Bluetooth to begin with and use factory settings or if I do use but my phone dies?

@VijayJ Yes, the adapter # C57672 will upgrade you from a 4-pole to a 7-pole, but it won't have the brake controller output wire or reverse light wire installed because you just don't need them right now. The Curt Echo # C51180 will have you set up the initial gain settings and from then on will apply the brakes with the intensity that you set it at regardless if your phone is connected or not. The only issue you might have is that you won't be able to activate the manual override unless you also install the # C83HR. This button will pair with the Echo and OneControl app and just has double-sided tape to stick it to your dash so you won't have to drill or run any wires.

@KevinC if I get the 7 pin wiring done (checked with my dealer and they do it) will the wireless brake controller fully function? They will replace the 4 pin with the 7 pin.

@VijayJ That's totally fine if the dealer upgrades your wiring from a 4-pole to 7-pole socket. The Curt Echo # C51180 has a sensor that detects deceleration and activates the brakes so it just needs power and ground from the 7-way to function since it won't be using the brake output pin/wire like a hardwired controller does.
