Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch For a 2022 Toyota Highlander Towing Kodiak Travel Trailer

Question:

We have a Kodiak 172 E Travel Trailer. Loaded to the max it is 3850 lbs. We are looking at purchasing a 2022 Toyota Highlander AWD, V6 with the factory hitch installed. Would this be an adequate tow vehicle? Would you suggest a weight distribution hitch? Thank you

Yes, the 2022 Toyota Highlander AWD, V6 with the factory hitch installed will be an adequate tow vehicle for your Kodiak 172E travel trailer.

I do recommend using a Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET as it will offer you a safer more comfortable drive. On top of the weight distribution it offers to keep your Highlander level when you are towing for improved steering and braking, it also offers sway control to keep your Kodiak driving straight while experiencing windy conditions on the road. This system is rated for trailers up to 6,000lbs and with a tongue weight between 200 and 600lbs.

You will need a 1-7/8" 12pt Thin Walled Socket # ALL643216 to install the included 2" hitch ball that comes with the Equal-i-zer system. If your Kodiak requires a 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # EQ91-00-6100 be sure to get that as well. The Sway Bracket Jackets # EQ95-01-5150 can be used reduce the amount of noise created when turning and maneuvering if that worries you.

I did notice that your Highlander will only come with a 4-way flat connector and your Kodiak Trailer will have trailer brakes and require a 7-way connector to use a brake controller. To convert your 4-way to the 7-way you will need a Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. This will allow for you to install a Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 with the Pigtail Wiring Harness # 7894. I have linked an installation video where we installed this brake controller with the installation kit on a 2019 Highlander so that you understand what is involved in the installation to decide if you feel comfortable with the installation or would rather take it to a service center to have done.
