Parts Needed To Add Electric Brakes To A Tandem 3.5K Axle Utility Trailer

Question:

Hello, I have a tandem axle utility trailer with 3500lbs axles. The trailer currently does not have brakes. It is wired with a standard 4-pin flat connector with brake/tail/turn lights and one set of orange side marker lights. Can you suggest a list of parts that I would need to retrofit electric drum brakes to this trailer? My tow vehicle is also has a 7-pin connector and a brake controller, so its good to go already. Thanks, Russell

Hey Russell, I can definitely help with that. The first thing is we need to be sure your 3,500 lb axles are equipped with a brake flange. It will be a square metal flange with 4 bolt holes in it at the base of the spindle, like part # 4-35. These can be added to the axle if needed (needs to be done professionally), or if your axle already has them, we can move on to brakes and hubs.

Since the 3,500 lb axles use standard sizing, adding eclectic brakes is not too hard. You will just need to add electric brake assemblies, hub/drum assemblies, a 7-way trailer harness and an emergency breakaway kit. I recommend the following parts:

- etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes # AKEBRK-35-SA

- Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K

- Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector with Molded Cable # H20046

- Junction Box W/ Install Kit # 3430001-JBK

- Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 20400

That will cover everything since you already have a 7-way and brake controller on the car. You may need additional Jacketed 7-Wire # DW04914-1 which is sold by the foot, or you can really use any 12 or 14 gauge wire.

We have a great help article that goes over in detail how to add electric brakes to a trailer along with all the parts needed. I have linked this article for you below. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any other questions.
