Would There Be Significant Benefit From Going With A Wider Rim?
Question:
Question: Hello, my camper trailer currently has 14x5.5J rims with ST205/75R14D tires. Im considering changing to a ST215/75R14 tire with a slightly higher weight rating. The intent is not for adding and carrying more weight in the camper, which is limited by the axle rating, but simply for the increased tire safety margin from the slightly higher tire max load rating. The ST215 tires being considered indicate an approved rim range of 5.5 to 7 inches. The question is, would there be any significant benefit to also change to a rim width of 6 or 7 inches, or should the existing 5.5 inch rims function just as well with a ST215 tire? Thanks.

That is a good question. There really is not any significant benefit from increasing the width of the rim. Especially from a safety standpoint, you are still using the same ST215 tires, so going to a slightly wider wheel is not going to have any noteworthy benefits. The tire you are using is the important part, and you are absolutely right that going to a larger, higher rated tire will increase tire safety margins.
The highest rated 215/75-14 tire we offer is the Provider # TTWTRTM2157514D. This is a load range D tires with an 8 ply rating and a 2,200 lb max load at 65 PSI. I am not sure exactly what tires you had your eye on but these will work with the 5.5" wide rims so this is what I recommend.
