You will need a couple of different items, including the brake controller, to install it in your 1998 Chevy K3500. First, if the truck does not already have a 4-Way trailer connector (or a 7-Way) you will need to install one using # 118315.
Then you would plug the 4-Way into the adapter included with the 4 and 7-Way installation kit # ETBC7. This kit includes a 7-Way and all of the wiring and accessories needed to install the brake controller. I have included some links that show and explain the # ETBC7 installation.
If your truck does have a 7-Way trailer connector then you will not need to install a 4-Way or the # ETBC7. Instead you will need installation kit # 5506. You can them follow the relevant parts of the # ETBC7 instructions.
