Best Portable Solar Panels For A 2022 Flagstaff E-Pro 19FD Travel Trailer

Question:

Hello, I have a 2022 E-Pro FD with one roof top solar panel I believe its a 190 watt panel. The trailer is equip with a solar on the side port that I was told I can add external solar panels to my system. I believe all I need is a couple more panels with kick stands that I can move around with the sun. I was hoping to use the same controller installed in my trailer but not sure I can add more with the existing controller or what panels or how many I would need? The existing 190 watt works great when its in the sun but who wants to part their trailer in direct sun all the time. Can you help?

To add more solar panels to your trailer you'll need to ensure that the solar charge controller can handle the load before purchasing additional panels and you'll want to purchase the same wattage. For example, if you add in a 100 watt panel the system will essentially downgrade your 190 watt panel to 100 watts and you'd only have 200 watts between the two panels.

Typically the side ports for solar are SAE connectors and they're ran directly to the battery without a controller looped in to the wiring. These side ports are typically wired this way because most portable solar panels will have a charge controller built into them and you wouldn't want to have it run through two separate controllers because they typically can't communicate with each other and will just shut the panels down and error out.

If you go with a portable system like the 130 watt # 34282730 or 200 watt # 34282610 then you'll have a built in charge controller and will have it charge the battery separate from the roof mounted panel. With the charges separated this would combine their wattage ratings together instead of limiting both to the lower wattage capacity. These would also allow you to park in the shade and run a cable out to get the panels in the perfect position. We also offer an extension cord # 34270356 to give you additional length.
