Installing Coupler in Place of Shelby 5135 on Boat Trailer

Re Shelby 5135 coupler, boat trailer - I have a DHL trailer, the tongue unit is welded on at the back. If I replace the entire coupler, would I attach it by drilling holes in the C channel to match the coupler, and bolt it in?

I recommend etrailer.com Channel Tongue Coupler part # CT-5003-Z to replace the Shelby 5135 coupler. The etrailer.com coupler has a channel width of 3" and takes a 2" ball. It also has 3" from center of bolt hole to center of bolt hole which are the dimensions of your Shelby coupler. So you could weld this in place of what you have like your current coupler or you could drill holes to mount the coupler like that.

Yes, the mounting holes for the Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler #CT-5003-Z measure 1" from the center down to the bottom of the channel.

To mount the Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler - Trigger Latch - Bolt On #CT-5003-Z, I recommend using 1/2 inch bolts. The higher the grade, the stronger the bolt. I've attached the review video to help as you plan this installation.

Since Shelby couplers aren't available you would need to buy an all new coupler like with the part #CT-5003-Z that you mentioned. This fits 3 inch channel like what you have and also is designed for the same 2 inch hitch ball size.
