Troubleshooting Circuit Breaker For Trailer Brake Controller Tripping On Dump Trailer When Turned Up

Question:

I have a 2019 F350 and when pulling my dump trailer empty, the brakes work fine. When the trailer is loaded and I increase the gain, the fuse for the brake controller blows. I checked all of the wires on the trailer frame with no signs of failure. When I hook up to another trailer and increase the gain, it works fine. The only thing I havent done yet is tested the magnets, but when I apply 12v on the trailer plug, all 4 brakes apply.

I am sorry to hear that!

Since your issue is only on your one dump trailer when it's loaded, It sounds like the connections to the magnet on it's brakes are bad, or the magnet itself is worn and shorting when power is added.

I recommend removing the drum and checking your brake magnets for wear/damage, because I'm betting you're going to see them really worn.

If you do find they are worn, I'd just replace the entire brake assemblies because it's likely other components are worn if the magnet is worn out.

Since you have a dump trailer you likely have 5,200-7,000lb axles and would need # 23-180-181, but check out the axle tag on the center of one of your axles to confirm this first.
