Recommended Flat Towing Set Up for a 2009 GMC Sierra 1500

Question:

I would like to flat tow my 09 GMC Sierra Crew Cab 4x4 behind my 03 Fleetwood Discovery 39J. What base plate, tow bar, and brake kit would you recommend? I plan to install myself if possible. Thanks in advance.

The best base plate kit for your 2009 Sierra 1500 is going to be the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit item # 3154-3. This kit is custom fit and built specifically for the Sierra 1500's. The removable arms will keep your front end as close to a factory look as possible.

With this base plate you will be able to use the Roadmaster Blackhawk 2 Tow Bar item # RM-422 and Safety Chains item # RM-653. This tow bar is compatible with the base plate kit recommended above and has enough weight capacity to handle your Sierra. It is made in the USA and has a non-binding design allowing you to release your truck on uneven ground.

For a braking kit you will want the Blue Ox Patriot Radio Frequency item # BLU37TR. This is a portable system that is easily removed when you arrive at your destination. It does not require a permanent install. The Patriot works with Sierra's that have or do not have the adjustable pedals.

You are also going to need a wiring harness. This is what allows you to use your Sierra's tail lights and wiring system while preventing feedback from your Fleetwood Discovery. I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit item # RM-15267.

I have linked several installation videos below along with the instructions so you can get an idea of what the installation process is going to be.
