Red Screen on Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller
Question:
I hooked up the black wire to 12 V the white wire to ground the red wire to my brake switch light and did not hook up my blue wire but when I step on the brakes, it flashes red could the controller be bad it’s brand new and when I hook it up to the blue wire that goes back to the wiring plug it’s still flashes red. Either way it flashes red I believe it’s a bad controller and it seems like the blue wire has a little bit of juice coming out of it at all times .8 V and when I use the manual override it goes to 12.6 V.

I checked the owner's manual for the Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller part # C51110, a flashing red display indicates that there is a brake circuit overload, likely caused by a short. It really didn't give any other detail aside from this so I first recommend you check to ensure the wires are hooked up correctly. The black wire goes directly to the positive battery terminal, there should be around 12 volts on this wire as it goes into the trailer brake controller. The white wire goes directly to the negative battery terminal, there should be no voltage on this wire. The red wire goes to the stop light switch or the wire that is only hot while the pedal is pressure, there should be around 12 volts on this wire with the pedal pressed. The blue wire goes to the trailer connector, there should be a varying degree of voltage on this wire relative to the gain setting but it should be close to 12 volts at full power with the override.
All that said, the Curt Venturer # C51110 is no longer available. It has been replaced with the Curt Venturer NEXT Trailer Brake Controller # C74VV.
If you have ensured the controller is hooked up correctly and has appropriate power, then it would need to be replaced if the issue persists. I have attached for you below a general troubleshooting article you'll want to look over as well before you proceed with the warranty claim process.
