Can a Reese 5th wheel hitch be lifted to the last hole raised and be safe to tow with?

Expert Reply:
The Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30928 has three height settings (14", 16", or 18") which can all be safely used to tow from. The key is to raise you hitch head to the correct height to keep your trailer as close to level as possible while towing, while still have at least 6" of clearance between the nose of the trailer and the top of your truck's bedrails.
To find this number you'll need to level your trailer and measure from the ground to the king pin plate and from the ground to the bed of your truck. You'll subtract the bed height from the king pin height to get the hitch head height.
For example, if you had a 38" truck bed height and 54" trailer height then you would want to place the hitch head at the 16" height slot.
