Why Does 2018 GMC Sierra 2500 Have Different Pin Weight Capacity from Cargo Capacity

Question:

Hello, I have a 2018 GMC Sierra 2500 SLT, my sticker says my cargo capacity is 2279lbs but my book says 5th wheel pin weight cannot exceed 3000 lbs. All references I can find says to subtract 5th wheel pin weight from cargo capacity but the numbers from my manual are more than the cargo capacity of my truck, what gives? Thanks

That's because pin weight capacity and truck bed cargo capacity aren't exactly the same thing. With truck bed cargo capacity you are factoring in the weight capacity of the bed of the truck which is a relatively thin metal (compared to truck frame), whereas with pin weight capacity a good portion of the weight is just supported by the truck frame since the rail kits only go through the truck bed and are supported by the frame.
