The Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter, # 3040-P, will work on your 2014 Toyota Tacoma as long as your truck came with a factory installed trailer wiring. The factory connector for this harness is located just above the emergency brake pedal.
If you are looking for a brake controller as well, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, # 90885. This is one of the most popular brake controllers on the market. I have attached an installation video of this brake controller and the plug-in harness on a 2012 Tacoma for you to check out.
If your truck does not have factory trailer wiring, then the brake controller will need to be hardwired into the trailer wiring that was, or is going to be installed. If you already have aftermarket trailer wiring installed, then you can use our brake controller wiring kit part # 5506 if you choose to go with the P2 brake controller.
To install the brake controller, you will have 4 wires coming from the brake controller. The black wire is the 12 volt power wire and should be attached to the positive battery post via the 20-amp circuit breaker. The white wire from the brake controller is the ground wire and should be ran the the negative battery post or grounded to a clean bare metal surface. The blue wire is the brake output wire and should be ran to the trailer connector on your truck using the white wire from the wiring kit.
Finally, the red wire splices into the stoplight circuit. Your truck may have the factory brake controller connector under the dash, even if it did not come with the factory trailer wiring. If this is the case, then the stoplight wire should be active at that plug. Use a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993, to test for the wire that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed before splicing in the red wire. If your truck does not have the factory brake controller connector, then you will need to find the wires coming from the stop light switch at the top of the brake pedal. You will see 4 to 5 wires. Toyota typically uses a blue wire for the stoplight switch wire, but I recommend testing the wires before splicing.
If your truck does not have any trailer wiring, then I recommend picking up our Electric Brake Controller Installation Kit, # ETBC7. This kit comes with all of the wiring and hardware necessary to install a 7-way trailer connector and a brake controller. I have attached an installation video of this kit on a 2008 Tacoma for you to check out. I have also attached FAQ articles on brake controllers and installation instructions.
