Can 7k Trailer Axle Brake Assemblies be Used in 6k Trailer Axle
Question:
I’m planning on installing new brakes on my 14,000# Komfort Fifth wheel. It has Dexter 6K axles. Will either of the Dexter brake assemblies #23-458-459 and 23-464-465 work with the 6000# axles? Will the 7000# brake assemblies provide improved braking over the 6000# brake assemblies? Regards

Helpful Expert Reply:
7k trailer brake assemblies like the part # 23-464-465 can work in 6k axle hubs but 6k assemblies like # 23-458-459 are the better option. 7k brakes in a 6k axle hub do not improve braking power. Basically they have a stronger magnet in them which is makes dialing in the brake controller gain setting more difficult as it will feel like they are coming on too strong and locking up brakes or too softly.
